IT is hereby notified that, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred by section 9 of “The Fisheries Conservation Act, 1884,”

THOMAS DYKE, of One-tree Point, and
NEIL McKAY, of Dipton,

have been appointed Officers for the purposes of that Act for that portion of the Provincial District of Otago formerly known as the Province of Southland.

Members of Patea Harbour Board appointed.

HIS Excellency the Governor has, in pursuance of the provisions of subsection (1) of section 7 of “The Patea Harbour Board Act, 1885,” and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, appointed

of Patea, to be a Member of the Patea Harbour Board; and has also, in pursuance of the provisions of section 41 of “The Harbours Act, 1878,” and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, appointed

JAMES DAVIDSON,

of Hawera, to be a Member of the Patea Harbour Board, the ratepayers of the Hawera Subdivision of the Patea Harbour District having, on the second Monday in February last, neglected to elect a member.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Te Horo Road District, County of Horowhenua.

THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the Te Horo Road Board, is published in accordance with “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

NOTICE is hereby given that the result of the poll on the proposal to borrow £2,300 from the Colonial Treasurer, for the purpose of constructing the district roads of the above Board, is as follows:—

Ratepayers on the roll, 53; votes exercisable on the roll, 71; number of ratepayers who voted for proposal, 34; number of votes recorded in favour of proposal, 43; ratepayers who voted against, nil; informal, 1.

As a majority in number of the ratepayers voted in favour of the proposal, and the number so voting are entitled to more than one-half the number of votes that can be exercised by the whole number of ratepayers, I hereby declare the proposal carried.

MY LORD,—With reference to your Lordship’s Despatch No. 5, of the 15th of January, I have the honour to acquaint your Lordship that the desire of your Government to be excluded from the operation of the Treaty of Commerce with Mexico* has been duly communicated to Her Majesty’s representative in Mexico, with instructions to give formal notice to the Mexican Government.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly and continuously attended a Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination, and that have attended a Native village school regularly and continuously during the previous twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competition among Maori boys, on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supplementary regulations that have been sent out to all teachers. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 15th and 16th December, 1890.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted not later than the 31st October next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary for Education.
