THE following notice, received from the Chairman of
the Selwyn County Council, is published in accord-
ance with “ The Counties Act, 1886.”

PROPOSAL TO RAISE A SPECIAL LOAN OF £4,000.
HEREBY give notice that at the poll taken on Monday, the
21st April, 1890, under the provisions of “ The Counties Act,
1886,” and amendments thereof, for the purpose of deciding
a proposal to borrow £4,000 for providing an auxiliary supply
of water from the River Waimakariri for the water-races in
the Malvern Water-race District, the votes recorded were as
follows:—
For the proposal, 269; against the proposal, 1; informal
votes, 3.
As the number of votes given in favour of the proposal
exceeds three-fifths of the total number of votes given at
such poll, I hereby declare the proposal to be carried.

THE following special order, made by the Kaiti Road
Board, is published in accordance with “ The Road
Boards Act, 1882.”

SPECIAL ORDER passed by the Kaiti Road Board, at a
Meeting held on Tuesday, 22nd April, 1890, re “ The
Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and
“ The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”
RESOLVED, That a special rate of ¾d. in the pound be
made upon all rateable property within the Kaiti Road
Board District for the period of twenty-six years, com-
mencing the 1st day of April, 1890, and ending the 31st
day of March, 1916, for the purpose of providing interest upon
a sum of £1,500, to be obtained, in terms of “ The Government
Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” to carry out the particular
public works set forth in the proposal agreed to by a resolu-
tion of the ratepayers of the said district at a poll taken on
the 25th day of February, 1890, the said rate to be due and
payable, in two equal instalments, on the 1st days of April
and October in each year.
I hereby certify that the above special order has been duly
passed, in conformity with the provisions of “ The Road
Boards Act, 1882,” relating to special orders.

Regulations re Precedence of Imperial and Colonial
Military Officers.

THE following regulations with reference to the pre-
cedence of Imperial and Colonial military officers,
received from the Secretary of State for War, is published
for general information.

112A. Officers of our army serving in any of our colonies or
dependencies (except as provided in Article 112) under com-
missions signed by Us, shall have precedence of colonial
officers of equal rank; but any such officers holding local
rank conferred upon them by the colonial authorities shall
take rank with colonial officers according to the dates of
their respective commissions. Local or temporary rank
granted to an officer of our army on assuming command of
colonial forces, or when proceeding to a colony for any
special service, shall be conferred by Us, and such officer
shall have precedence of all colonial officers of equal rank.

Senior Examination of January, 1891, the period of litera-
ture will be the period from 1800 to 1850, and the special
