[No. 19
Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is
provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated
in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection,
after the lapse of a period of not less than forty-five days
from the date of the first public notification hereof, in the
manner and upon the conditions mentioned in the said Act,
and at the price per acre stated in the said Schedule.
SCHEDULE.
UNSURVEYED LANDS.—MANGAHAO BLOCK.
Blocks V., VI., and IX., Mangahao Survey District,
5,000 acres. First- and second-class lands. Cash price,
17s. 6d. to £1 10s.; deferred-payment price, £1 1s. 10½d. to
£1 17s. 6d.; and perpetual-lease rental, 10½d. to 1s. 6d. per
acre.
Description of Land: This block is situated between the
Woodville-Mangahao Special-settlement Block and the Tara-
rua Forest Reserve. The area comprises broken and undu-
laying hills, intersected by deep gullies, with some flat land
adjacent to the special-settlement sections. The block is
fairly well watered by streams having their sources in the
main range; the area is covered generally with mixed bush,
including rimu, rata, tawa, hinau, rewarewa, pukatea,
maire, and thick underscrub of supplejack, young tawa, and
the usual varieties of shrubs, but the growth on the higher
slopes of the range is mostly tawhero. The soil varies from
fair to good; the block is accessible from Pahiatua by the
Pahiatua—Palmerston Road, the distance from the township
to the northern boundary being about eight and a half miles,
the road being only formed as far as the Mangahao River.
The south-eastern boundary is only about five and a half
miles distant from Tutaekara, on the Forty-mile Bush main
coach-road, but the formation of the connecting roads is still
incomplete. The projected extension of the line of railway,
Eketahuna to Woodville, passes within three miles of the
block. The block is centrally situated for the Woodville,
Pahiatua, and Palmerston North markets, the distance to the
latter town over the Tararua Range being about fourteen
miles, the road being only formed from Palmerston to the
western foot of the range. The elevation of the country is
from 700ft. to 1,500ft. The rainfall in this district is copious,
and the land is generally considered well adapted for pastoral
pursuits.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor,
this thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight
hundred and ninety.

ONSLOW, Governor.
I
N pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by the third section of "The Land
Act Amendment Act, 1887" (hereinafter termed "the said
Act"), I, William Hillier, Earl of Onslow, the Governor of the
Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the
Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is
provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enume-
rated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or
selection, after the lapse of a period of forty-five days from
the date of the first public notification hereof, in the manner
and upon the conditions mentioned in the said Act, and at
the price per acre respectively stated in the said Schedule.
SCHEDULE.
THE KAIWHATA BLOCK.
Unsurveyed land, Blocks IV. and VIII., Wainuioru, and
I., IV. and V., Kaiwhata Survey Districts, 5,000 acres.
First- and second-class lands. Cash price, 7s. 6d. to £1 7s.
6d.; deferred-payment price, 9s. 4½d. to £1 14s. 4½d.; and
perpetual-lease rental, 4½d. to 1s. 4½d. per acre. The area
about the Mangamouku Stream is weighted with £20, being
the value of improvements, consisting of a whare, garden,
and grassing.
Description of Land: This block is situated on both sides of
the Kaiwhata Stream, on the East Coast, Wairarapa District,
and is bounded on the north-east by Te Maipi Native lands;
on the south by the properties of Messrs. Tatham, Nitz,
Adams, and by Crown lands; and towards the north-west by
Messrs. Williams and Beetham's Brancepeth Run. The area
comprises generally hilly land intersected by deep gullies,
with small flats along the Kaiwhata and Bismarck Creeks;
there are suitable sites for homesteads where the track from
the Wharau crosses the Kaiwhata. In the northern part of
the block, above the junction of Bismarck Creek, the ridges
are flatter, and the country nearly all open grass land of
superior quality. The block is fairly-well watered, most of
the gullies having water in them in the summer; dams
could be constructed and water stored. The forest com-
prises tawai and tawhero on the ridges, but on the slopes
and in the gullies there are, in addition, rimu, matai,
kahikatea, hinau, maire, miro, and occasional totara trees;
the undergrowth consists of rangiora, makomako, mahoe, &c.
Timber for building and fencing purposes is generally avail-
able. The formation is sandstone, with slate and shale
showing in some of the gullies. The soil on the ridges in
the southern part of the block is generally of inferior quality,
but it varies from fair to good in the gullies, whilst that in
the northern part of the block is, as before stated, of superior
quality. The altitude of the country ranges from 500ft. to
1,300ft. above sea-level. The access is via Gladstone, there
being a dray-road to Cooper's, about one and a half miles
from Gladstone, and a horse-road for a further distance of
ten miles to Nitz's, in the Kaiwhata, which is only two miles
from the south boundary of the block. The country is
infested with rabbits, nevertheless the northern part of the
block offers an excellent opportunity for settlers who wish to
secure estates capable of immediate occupation and stock-
ing. If access can be secured to the landing-places on the
sea-coast, the cost of carriage to and from Wellington will be
very moderate.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor,
this thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight
hundred and ninety.

district. The land is of good quality, tawa, rimu, and rata
being the prevailing timber, with patches of totara, hinau,
&c., but much of the growth is light, and could be cleared at
