Notice of Intention to take Land for a Road in connection
with the Palmerston-Woodville Railway: Palmerston-
Gorge Section.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," to exe-
cute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of a road
in connection with the Palmerston-Woodville Railway,
Palmerston-Gorge Section, and for the purposes of such public
work the lands described in the Schedule hereto are
required to be taken; and notice is further given that the
plan of the said road and of the lands so required to be
taken is deposited in the Public Works Office, Palmerston
North, and is there open for inspection. And notice is hereby
given that all persons affected by the execution of the said
public work or by the taking of the said lands shall, if they
have any well-grounded objections to the execution of the
said public work or to the taking of such lands, set forth the
same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days
from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister
for Public Works, Wellington.

Notice to Mariners, No. 34 of 1889.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, is published for
general information.

MORETON BAY.—PROPOSED ALTERATION IN THE LIGHTS
FOR ENTERING BY THE NORTH OR HOWE CHANNEL.

NOTICE is hereby given that, in consequence of the continued
growth westward of the East Bank, it is intended, about the
middle of January, to so alter the position of Tangaluma
Light as to give, with Cowan Cowan Light, a new line of
direction for the North or Howe Channel.

Also to so alter the position of the Yellow Patch Light
that when brought into line with the light at Cape Moreton
it will indicate the northernmost point at which the Tanga-
luma and Cowan Cowan lead should be used.

The old lighthouse at the Yellow Patch will for a time be
left in its present position.

Due notice will be given of the date from which these
alterations will take effect.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and
Charges in force upon the New Zealand Railways.

THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by "The
Government Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the fol-
lowing alterations in and additions to the scale of fares,
rates, and charges on the New Zealand Railways, to come
into force on and after the 1st day of January, 1890:—

PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.

AUCKLAND SECTION.

Crude sulphur from Oxford to Auckland will be charged
18s. per ton; minimum quantity, 4 tons.

WANGANUI SECTION.

The maximum rate for butter, in 4-ton lots, consigned
by way of the Manawatu Company's line to Wellington
from stations on the Wanganui Section, will be 48s. per ton.

of an invention for scouring wool by a cold-water process.

No. 4135.—EDWIN M. KELLOGG, of Chicago, Cook, Illi-
nois, United States of America, has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for improvements in sheaf-
carriers.

No. 4136.—HENRY EDWARD PRIDMORE, of Chicago, Illi-
ois, United States of America, has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for improvements in har-
vesters and grain-binders.

No. 4137.—JAMES BERESFORD, of 4, Keppel Road, Chorl-
ton-cum-Hardy, Lancaster, England, Clerk, and JOSEPH
PHILLIPS BEDSON, of Bradford House, Bradford, Man-
chester, Lancaster aforesaid, Civil and Mechanical Engineer,
have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for
improvements in the reels or spools upon which barbed wire
and barbed, pronged, or spiked bands or stripes of metal for
fencing or other purposes are coiled or wound for the pur-
pose of carriage or transport.

No. 4138.—CARL JOHANNES EDWARD LINNEMANN, Mer-
chant, and THOMAS WILLIAM QUELCH HONEYWILL, Inventor,
both of Hokitika, Westland, New Zealand, have deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for a patent self-
acting marine pendulum governor, to be called "Honeywill
and Linnemann's Patent Marine Pendulum Governor."

No. 4139.—JOHN FISHER CAMPBELL, of Sawyer's Bay,
Otago, New Zealand, Manufacturer, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for a new or improved
butter-powder specially adapted for keeping butter firm and
solid in hot weather, and for improving its flavour and taste,
to be called "Mina's Butter-powder."

And I have appointed Thursday, the 20th day of March
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of
any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 5th day
of March next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.
