Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

Wellington, 11th October, 1889.

No. 3995.—ROBERT ROBERTSON MENZIES, of Thames, New Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the rapid cleansing of bottles, to be called "Menzies' Patent Rapid Bottle-cleanser."

No. 3996.—ALEXANDER DUNBAR, of Liverpool, Lancaster, England, Barrister-at-law, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for improvements in apparatus for making casks.

No. 3997.—ALFRED ROBERTS PULLIN, of Sydney, New South Wales, Artist, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for improvements in lock-nuts, bolts, and fastenings, specially applicable to rail- and tramway-joints.

No. 3998.—WILLIAM JAMES DALTON, of Auckland, New Zealand, Civil Engineer and Patent Agent, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improvement in boots, shoes, and fasteners, to be called "Patent Anticum Boots, Shoes, and Fasteners."

No. 3999.—JOHN HICKES, of Auckland, New Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improved tobacco-pipe, to be called "The Patent Tube Tobacco-pipe."

No. 3402.—WILLIAM STRUTHERS, of Sydney, New South Wales, Mechanical Engineer, and ROBERT MORISON STEWART and GAVIN SCOTT, of Sydney, aforesaid, Merchants, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improved churn.

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 31st day of December next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 16th day of December next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3401.—EDWIN TATHAM, of No. 76, Mullens Street, Balmain, near Sydney, New South Wales, Gas Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for improvements in hydro-genous and hydro-carbon gas or gases and gaseous mixtures, and in the manufacture thereof.

And I have appointed Friday, the 20th day of December next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 5th day of December next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 4008.—FREDERICK WALTER PATERSON, of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, Boat-builder, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for opening oysters, to be known as "Paterson's Exhibition Oyster-holder and-opener."

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 7th day of January next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 23rd day of December next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 4009.—ROBERT HUTCHINSON, of Auckland, New Zealand, Flax-dresser, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for dressing flax, to be called "Hutchinson's Patent Flax-dressing Process."

No. 4010.—MATHEW BARRETT, of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, Labourer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for a safety swamp-shoe to be attached to horses' hoofs, to be called "Barrett's Patent Safety Swamp-shoe."

And I have appointed Wednesday, the 8th day of January next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 24th day of December next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

School-site appropriated under "The Education Reserves Act, 1877."

In exercise of the powers and authorities vested in them by "The Education Reserves Act, 1877," the School Commissioners for the Canterbury Provincial District have, by resolution dated the 3rd September, 1889, appropriated and set apart the hereinafter-described parcel of land as a site for a public school.

Christchurch, 11th October, 1889.

All that parcel of land in the Provincial District of Canterbury, containing by admeasurement 2 acres, more or less, being part of Reserve No. 935, situate in the Pigeon Bay Survey District, and bounded as follows: Commencing at the northernmost corner of the said reserve; thence south-easterly along the north-east boundary thereof, a distance of 2 chains 50 links, and extending back south-westerly 8 chains, in a rectangular block, being bounded on the north-west by the north-west boundary of the said reserve.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke's Bay.

Three scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly and continuously attended a Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination, and that have attended a Native village school regularly and continuously during the previous twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competition to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the current year. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 16th and 17th December, 1889. Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted not later than the 31st October next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary to the Education Department.
