Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.
Patent Office,
Wellington, 23rd September, 1889.
NO. 3959.-JOB OSBORNE, Farmer, and JOHN ROBB,
Blacksmith, both of Doyleston, Canterbury, New
Zealand, have deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in rings for holding bags when
being filled.
No. 3962.-SYDNEY MORRIS, of Eltham, Taranaki, New
Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for an improved butter-mould.
No. 3963.-WILLIAM ALFRED CALDWELL, Farmer, and
JOSEPH JAMES MACKY, Agent, both of Auckland, New Zea-
land, have deposited at this office a specification of an inven-
tion for improvements in the construction of metal plates for
the protection of heels of boots and shoes, to be called "The
Acme Heel-plate."
No. 3964.-ERNEST HERBERT POTTER, of Albert Avenue,
Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand, Salesman, has de-
posited at this office a specification of an invention for
separating and disuniting the sap, juices, and other sub-
stances from the fibre of the Phormium tenax, to be called
"Potter's Flax-mucilage Dissociator."
No. 3965.-RICHARD BURKE, of Cashmere, Canterbury,
New Zealand, Farmer, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for an improved screw-attachment for
regulating plough-shares to any required depth of furrow, to
be called "Burke's Improved Regulating Screw for Ploughs."
No. 3966.-JOHN ORBELL BIDWILL, of Pihautea, Welling-
ton, New Zealand, Farmer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved drain-plough
attachment.
And I have appointed Thursday, the 12th day of December
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 27th day of
November next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3968.-WILLIAM WARD, of Dunedin, New Zealand,
Gold-miner, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention to be called "Ward's Acme Quartz Pulp Gravi-
tating and Frictional Amalgamator."
And I have appointed Friday, the 13th day of Decem-
ber next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 28th day of
November next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

Notice to Companies under "The Property Assessment
Act, 1885."
IN accordance with the provisions of the above-mentioned
Act, I hereby give public notice that, in respect of Joint-
stock Companies and in respect of Gold-mining Companies,
the 15th day of October next is the date, and my office,
Government Buildings, Wellington, is the place, at which
the Public Officers of all companies are requested to furnish
statements of property belonging to such companies, in
accordance with the said Act.

Civil Service Senior Examination.
Education Department,
Wellington, 22nd October, 1888.
IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke's
Bay.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of Β£35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly
and continuously attended a Native school during the pre-
vious year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of
the month preceding the date of the examination; the
other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under
fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the
date of the examination, and that have attended a Native
village school regularly and continuously during the previous
twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competi-
tion to Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the
regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships
Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in
the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in
May of the current year. The examination will be held at
convenient centres on the 16th and 17th December, 1889.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.

Application for Rehearing of Claim dismissed.
NATIVE LAND COURT, NEW ZEALAND:
DISTRICT OF WELLINGTON.
IN the matter of a decision of the said Court given at
Greytown, on the 30th day of August, 1888, upon the
hearing of a claim for partition of land known as Uruokakite
South; and in the matter of an application by Paraone
Pahoro for a rehearing upon such claim, so far as affects
Kopunuiarangi, part of Uruokakite South:
Upon inquiry in open Court as to the said application for
rehearing, held at Greytown on the 14th and 16th days of
August, 1889, and at Wellington on the 12th day of Septem-
ber, 1889, by the Chief Judge, assisted by Hohepa Horo-
mona, an Assessor of the Court:
I, Hugh Garden Seth Smith, Chief Judge of the said Court,
in exercise of the authority in that behalf vested in me, do
hereby dismiss such application.
