Notice to Companies under "The Property Assessment
Act, 1885."

IN accordance with the provisions of the above-mentioned
Act, I hereby give public notice that, in respect of Joint-
stock Companies and in respect of Gold-mining Companies,
the 15th day of October next is the date, and my office,
Government Buildings, Wellington, is the place, at which
the Public Officers of all companies are requested to furnish
statements of property belonging to such companies, in
accordance with the said Act.

NO. 3902.-WILLIAM WOOD CULCHETH, of 31, Temple
Court, Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Civil
Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in water-lifts.

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 1st day of April
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said application and all objections thereto; and I
require all persons having an interest in opposing the
grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 17th
day of March next, at this office, particulars in writing of

No. 3913.-KATE EVENDEN, Wife of Robert Edward
Evenden, of Wellington, New Zealand, Joiner, has deposited
at this office a specification of an invention for an improved
nail for corrugated iron and for some other purposes.
No. 3914.-GUSTAF DILLBERG, of Wellington, New Zea-
land, has deposited at this office a specification of an inven-
tion for improvements in automatic delivery-boxes.
No. 3915.-CARL OLOF LUNDHOLM, of Stevenston, Ayr,
Scotland, Chemist, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for improvements in the manufacture of
dynamite.
No. 3916.-CHARLES GLENCROSS, of Sydney, New South
Wales, Coachbuilder, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for an improved method of hanging the
doors of Broughams, Hansom cabs, and similar vehicles.

And I have appointed Wednesday, the 27th day of Novem-
ber next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of
any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 12th day of
November next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will

improved mode of and apparatus for smelting minerals by
means of combustible gases.

No. 3918.-THOMAS BURNS, of Messrs. White, Burns, and
Company, of Bonnington Skin-works, and 1, Pilrig Street,
Edinburgh, North Britain, Skinner, Tanner, and Wool Mer-
chant, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for machinery or apparatus for scouring and
washing skins and wool and analogous materials.
No. 3919.-EDWARD WATERS, of No. 131, William Street,
Melbourne, Victoria, Patent Agent, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for improvements in
machines for casting type-bars for printing and analogous
purposes (being a communication from Jacob Bright, of
and on behalf of the Linotype Syndicate of Great Britain,
London).
No. 3920.-GEORGE KEMP, of Piaka, near Kueru, Wel-
lington, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for a guard or shield for the drum-
spindles of flax-strippers.
No. 3922.-WILLIAM JAMES DALTON, of Auckland, New
Zealand, Civil Engineer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an improved machine for
preparing sausage-casings.
No. 3923.-JOSEPH JAMES MACKY, of Auckland, New Zea-
land, has deposited at this office a specification of an inven-
tion for an improved device for the prevention of fraud or
mistakes in the issue or manipulation of cheques, receipts,
promissory-notes, and the like.

And I have appointed Thursday, the 28th day of November
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I re-
quire all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 13th
day of November next, at this office, particulars in writing

(name of firm, S. White and Co.), has deposited at this office
a specification of an invention for drying fish, fish-manure
and blood, to be called "White's Patent Fish- and Blood-
drier."
No. 3926.-EDWARD HALE GULLIVER, M.A., Clerk in Holy
Orders, and BENJAMIN WILLS BETTS, Architect, both of
Auckland, New Zealand, have deposited at this office a speci-
fication of an invention for regulating the flow of liquids, to
be called "Gulliver and Betts's Liquid Supply-regulator."
No. 3927.-EDWARD HUGHES ELLIOTT, of Timaru, Canter-
bury, New Zealand, Mechanical Engineer, has deposited at
this office a specification of an invention for a revolving
chromo automatic register.
No. 3928.-JAMES ARNOTT, of Port Chalmers, Otago, New
Zealand, Master Mariner, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for finding a vessel's position, in
heavy or foggy weather on the coast, when one point of land
is seen only, to be used with the chart, and called "The
Coaster's Assistant."
No. 3929.-JAMES BELL, of Inch-Clutha, Otago, New Zea-
land, Flax-miller, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for dressing or scraping New Zealand native
flax, called "The Maori Flax-dressing Machine."

And I have appointed Friday, the 29th day of November
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 14th day of
November next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will
be precluded from urging the same.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

Education Department,
Wellington, 22nd October, 1888.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.
