THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

  1. The examination in general knowlege for candidates
    for admission as solicitors shall be the matriculation exami-
    nation of the New Zealand University; Latin being a com-
    pulsory subject.
  2. The examination in law for candidates for admission
    as solicitors shall be the law subjects prescribed for the
    LL.B. degree of the New Zealand University, omitting
    jurisprudence, constitutional history, Roman law, inter-
    national law, and conflict of laws.
  3. Every candidate for admission either as a barrister or
    solicitor who shall produce a certificate emanating from the
    proper authority that he has passed any examination in
    general knowledge required to be passed by candidates for
    admission as solicitors in England or Ireland or as law agents
    in Scotland, or that he has passed an examination
    either at the University of New Zealand, or any
    University in Great Britain, Ireland, or the Austra-
    lian Colonies, or at any college or institution affiliated
    to or connected with any such University, or who
    has passed the New Zealand Senior Civil Service Examina-
    tion, and who shall prove to the satisfaction of a Judge of
    the Supreme Court that such examination comprised any
    subject or subjects corresponding with any of those hereby
    prescribed for the general knowledge examination, shall be
    excused from being examined in such subject or subjects.
  4. The age of all candidates for admission must appear on
    affidavit.
  5. A barrister or advocate previously admitted elsewhere
    must produce, to the Judge of the district to whom he ap-
    plies for admission, his admission, or some certificate or
    other document, duly verified, proving his admission, and
    make an affidavit that he is the person named therein, and
    was admitted as therein stated.
  6. Every candidate for admission as a barrister or solicitor
    who claims to be entitled, as a graduate of some University,
    to be admitted after an examination in law only, shall pro-
    duce his diploma, or some duly-authenticated certificate or
    other documentary evidence of his having taken a degree,
    with an affidavit verifying the same, and proving his identity
    with the person mentioned in such document.
  7. Every candidate for admission as a solicitor who claims
    to be entitled to be admitted on the ground of some pre-
    vious admission elsewhere must produce documentary evi-
    dence of such admission purporting to emanate from proper
    authority, and an affidavit verifying the same, and proving
    his identity with the person named therein.
  8. Every candidate before being admitted shall produce
    evidence of his good character, to the satisfaction of the
    Judge to whom he applies for admission.
  9. A sum equal to the examination fees paid under "The
    Law Practitioners Act, 1882," by candidates shall be paid
    over to the University of New Zealand to defray the expense
    of examination.
  10. Duplicates of all notices of candidates for examination
    shall be at once forwarded by the Registrar of the Supreme
    Court receiving the same to the Registrar of the University.
  11. These rules and regulations shall come into operation
    on the 1st June, 1890.

Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 21st June, 1889.

N O. 5744. MAURICE JOEL, of Dunedin, Otago, New Zea-
land, Brewer, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for an improvement in a grating or screen
for use in sluice-boxes in gold-sluicing, where a large fall or
grade cannot easily be obtained, by use of springs in connec-
tion therewith, whereby part of the grating or screen is made
to automatically shake up and down, thus helping the dis-
charge of large stones and other large hard material.

No. 3745. RUDOLF BESSEL, of Paulau, near Brieg, Prussia,
Germany, Teacher, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for a new means for destroying lice, rats, rab-
bits, hamsters, moles, foxes, &c.

No. 3746. GEORGE MAIN, of Spring Creek, Marlborough,
New Zealand, Flax-dresser, and CHARLES WILLIAMS, of Blen-
heim, Marlborough, aforesaid, Bootmaker, have deposited at
this office a specification of an invention for improved chairs
and spring beating-roller for flax-machines.

No. 3747. RICHARD FRANCIS STARKIE, of 47, Sussex
Street, London, S.W., Middlesex, England, Physician, and
ANDREW COPLEY, of 45, Sussex Street, aforesaid, Practical
Mining Engineer, have deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for an improved apparatus for extracting fine
gold from auriferous ores or tailings by amalgamation.

No. 3748. ALEXANDER JOHN RUTHERFORD, of Wellington,
New Zealand, Record Clerk of the House of Representatives,

has deposited at this office a specification of an invention
for a new vermin-poison.

No. 3749. JOHN SMITH, of Flinders Street, Melbourne,
Victoria, Merchant, has deposited at this office a specifica-
tion of an invention for an improved composition to be used
as a waterproofing for textile fabrics, and as a paint for wood
and other surfaces.

And I have appointed Thursday, the 29th day of August
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I
require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant
of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 14th day
of August next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

facturer, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in machinery for the manufac-
ture of bottles.

No. 3752. HENRY HARRISON DOHY, of London, England,
Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in the treatment of rhea or
ramie and other fibrous plants, and in apparatus therefor.

No. 3753. REGINALD STANLEY, of Nuneaton Colliery,
Nuneaton, Warwick, England, Brick and Tile Manufacturer
and Colliery Proprietor, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for improvements in boring- or tun-
nelling-machines.

No. 3754. EDWIN WARREN TUCKER, of Nos. 26 and 28,
Fremont Street, San Francisco, California, United States of
America, Mechanical Engineer, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for improvements in surface-
condensers.

No. 3755.-EDMUND ELKANAH SHAW, of 38, Market Street,
Sydney, New South Wales, Merchant, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for improvements in
apparatus for synchronizing clocks (being a communication
from Marshall E. Hunter, of New York, United States of
America).

And I have appointed Tuesday, the 3rd day of September
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all

holding scouring-cloths and scouring-brushes, to facilitate
the use of the same (being a communication from Christian
Steensen, of Christiana, Norway, Timber Merchant).

No. 3757. WILLIAM MCLENNAN, of Filleul Street,
Dunedin, New Zealand, Baker, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for washing, entitled
"McLennan's Patent Washing-machine."

No. 3758. CHARLES LOUIS BECKER, of Turakina, Wel-
lington, New Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for an apparatus for holding
wire and straining wire, also coiling or uncoiling wire, to be
called "Becker's Combined Coiling and Uncoiling Wire-
holder and -strainer."

No. 3579.-EDWARD SMETHURST, of Kaiapoi, Canterbury,
New Zealand, Contractor, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for the application of a compo-
sition for the purpose of constructing weirs, dams, groins, or
river-protective works, or for other works of a similar nature.

No. 3760.-EDMUND TAYLOR, of Eden Terrace, Mount
Eden, Auckland, New Zealand, Grocer, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for separating kauri
gum from any deleterious matter, to be called "Taylor's
Patent for extracting Impurities from Kauri Gum."
