NO. 3694.—THOMAS CARTER, of Courtenay Place, Wellington, New Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for washing and saving gold, intituled “Carter’s Eureka Gold-washing and -saving machine.”
No. 3695.—WILLIAM YOUNG, Jun., of Rangiriri, Waikato, Auckland, New Zealand, Merchant, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for the use of manuka (Leptospermum scoparium), tea-tree (Cordyline australis), and tauwhine or tawina (Cassina leptophylla)—that is, the plants and shrubs in New Zealand known by these names—as tanning material, and the making of tanning extract therefrom.
No. 3696.—HERBERT DEVERIL, Photolithographer, and WILLIAM GALLAGHER, Gentleman, both of Sydney, New South Wales, have deposited at this office a specification of an invention for an improvement in photographic negatives and sensitised plates for use in photo-illustrative processes.
No. 3698.—ALBERT SANDFORD, of Rakino Island, Auckland, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for preparing fish, to be called “Jellied Smoked Schnapper,” or other fish, as the case may be.
And I have appointed Wednesday, the 31st day of July next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 16th day of July next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Goldfields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these conditions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the Middle Island.

The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any existing workings.

No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield within three years from the date of its being registered.

Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an application for reward.

No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land without a prospecting license authorising the person therein named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect, in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of “The Mining Act, 1886,” inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be made upon Native land without the consent of the Native owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of literature will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and the special books will be Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, and Goldsmith’s Vicar of Wakefield.

Description of Land: Lots 17 and 20 contain a good deal of green burnt kauri of a valuable nature, the latter having a portion of open land in it; 22 has very heavy kauri upon it; 23 has a frontage to Whangaroa Harbour.

Description of Land: The old crater of Sunday Island, part of which is open and bare dried mud, somewhat stony, though the greater part is covered with pohutakawa, ngaio, and other trees. The soil in parts is very good, but generally not so. It is for the most part naturally fenced by steep cliffs. There are three small lakes in this run.

Description of Land: Situate on the East Coast, near Tauranga. The runs in some cases contain bush, and extend from the vicinity of the lakes to Richmond Township. They are watered by streams, and are near the main Tauranga–Opotiki Road.
