Notice of Intention to take Land for Deviation of a Road
near Wetheral Station, on the Eyreton Branch of the
Hurunui-Waitaki Railway.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," to exe-
cute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of a road
deviation near Wetheral Station, on the Eyreton branch of
the Hurunui-Waitaki Railway, and for the purposes of such
public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is
required to be taken; and notice is further given that the
plan of the said road and of the land so required to be
taken is deposited in the post office at Ohoka, and is
there open for inspection. And notice is hereby given that
all persons affected by the execution of the said public work
or by the taking of the said land shall, if they have any well-
grounded objections to the execution of the said public work
or to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing,
and send such writing, within forty days from the first pub-
lication of this notice, to the Minister for Public Works,
Wellington.

Additional Regulations for the Examination of Masters
and Mates.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 29th April, 1889.
IN pursuance of the power vested in me by sections 24 and
25 of "The Shipping and Seamen's Act, 1877," I do
hereby make the following additional regulations for the
examination of Masters and Mates, the same being similar
to additional regulations issued by the Board of Trade, and
do hereby order that they shall come into force on the 1st
day of October next.

On and after the 1st October, 1889, no candidate will
be allowed to be examined for any grade, whether for Extra,
Ordinary, Fore-and-Aft, or Home Trade Passenger Ship
Certificate, unless he has served at sea two years within the
last six years, and six months within the last three years,
immediately preceding the date of his application to be
examined. -
A candidate for an Ordinary Certificate of any grade,
who does not already hold an Ordinary Certificate of a lower
grade, must prove that he has served twelve months in a
square-rigged sailing-vessel within the last five years. -
Any cases not coming within the above conditions must
be submitted for the special consideration of the Marine
Department before the candidate is allowed to be examined.
Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold-
fields. Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
Middle Island. -
The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
existing workings. -
No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
within three years from the date of its being registered. -
Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
application for reward. -
No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the
Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, and the Chief Harbour-
master, Nukualofa, Tonga, are published for general infor-
mation.

VICTORIA.—SOUTH CHANNEL, PORT PHILLIP BAY.
PILOTS, masters of vessels, and others are hereby informed
that, on or about the 1st day of April, 1889, dredging opera-
tions will be commenced in the South Channel, beginning at
a point 1,500ft. easterly from the Pile Light, and extending
from such point westerly 3,600ft.
During the progress of deepening the channel, and until
further notice, three pile buoys will be moored in line to
mark the south side of the proposed new cutting, and the
dredge will be moored so as to leave during night or day a
clear channel passage 200ft. wide to the northward of the
dredge.
From sunset to sunrise the dredge will exhibit three lights
forward and three lights aft from globular lanterns, each not
less than 10in. diameter. Such lanterns will be placed in
