THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

[No. 18

Sword-belt: Black-morocco leather, single sword-slings.
The belt and slings to have two straight lines of em-
broidered gold, one near each edge. The plate for the
sword-belt to be gilt, of the same pattern as for officers
of the Royal navy, but with the letters N.A.V. across
the anchor in the centre.

  1. Undress:-
    Frock-coat: Blue cloth, double-breasted; buttons and
    distinction braid on sleeves, as in full dress.
    Cap: Blue cloth, 8in. across the top, with a black mohair
    band 1½in. wide, with a badge in front, as follows:
    A silver anchor, with the letters N.A.V. above it in
    silver, on a medallion of black velvet, encircled by an
    edging of gold lace, surrounded by a laurel wreath of
    gold embroidery, except at the top, where a crown em-
    broidered in gold and silver, with a crimson-velvet
    centre, is to be placed over the medallion. Peak of
    patent leather.
    Trousers: As in full dress, but without lace.
    Necktie: As in full dress.
    Sword: As in full dress.
    Scabbard: As in full dress.
    Sword-knot: As in full dress.
    Sword-belt: As in full dress, but without embroidery,
    with round slings.

Lieutenant.

  1. Full dress:-
    Same as Lieutenant-Commander, with the following ex-
    ceptions:-
    Coat: The single stripe of 3/8in. gold braid to be omitted.
    Epaulettes: The star above the badge is to be omitted.

  2. Undress:-
    Same as Lieutenant-Commander, with the exception of
    the distinction lace round the sleeves, which is to be the
    same as in full dress.

Sub-Lieutenant.

  1. Full dress:-
    Same as Lieutenant, with the following exceptions:-
    Coat: The sleeves to have one stripe of distinction braid
    round them.
    Trousers: Without lace.
    Epaulettes: None; but, instead, two shoulder-straps of
    the same pattern and device as epaulettes of Lieutenant,
    without bullion.

  2. Undress:-
    Same as Lieutenant, except the distinction braid round the
    sleeves, which is to be the same as in full dress.

Medical Officers. - Staff-Surgeons.

  1. Full Dress :-
    Coat: Blue cloth, single-breasted at angles with the skirt;
    nine buttons in front placed in threes; padded turn-
    down collar; pointed flaps with three notched holes and
    buttons under; round cuffs with two stripes formed of
    two waved lines of 3/8in. gold braid intersecting each
    other so as to form bands 3/8in. wide, with a stripe
    of 1/8in. gold braid between them; the spaces between
    the single and double stripes to be 1/8in., and to be filled
    up with scarlet cloth or velvet.
    Hat: Cocked, same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Epaulettes: The same as for Lieutenant-Commander,
    except that the device will be two stars surmounted by
    the letters N.A.V.
    Buttons: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Trousers: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Sword: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Belt: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Scabbard: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.
    Necktie: Same as Lieutenant-Commander.

  2. Undress:-
    Same as for Lieutenant-Commander, except that the
    stripes are as laid down for full dress, and that there are
    two rows of buttons on each side of front placed in
    threes.

Surgeons.

  1. Full Dress:-
    Same as for Staff-Surgeons, omitting single stripe of 3/8in.
    braid.

  2. Undress:-
    Same as for Staff-Surgeons, omitting single stripe of 3/8in.
    braid.

Naval Cadets.

  1. Full Dress:--
    Coat: Blue cloth, single-breasted, with nine notched holes
    on each breast, and three on each cuff and pocket-flap,
    with buttons to correspond, lined with white stand-up
    collar, with a button-hole of white twist on each side of
    the collar, with a corresponding button.
    Buttons: The same as Sub-Lieutenant.
    Dirk: Gilt mounted, with white fishskin grip; hilt 5¾in.
    long, and fitted to the cross-bar with oval medallion and
    anchor, and with spring to hold the blade to scabbard;
    blue and gold blade, embossed, 17¾in. long; length of
    dirk, when in the scabbard, 23¾in.
    Scabbard: Black leather, 18in. long, fitted with gilt
    locket at the top, with two rings to attach to slings of
    belt, and at bottom with a gilt-pointed shoe.
    Sword-knot: Blue and gold cord, with small gold bullion
    tassel.
    Belt: The same as Lieutenant's undress belt, but with
    slings.
    Trousers: Without lace, same as for Sub-Lieutenant.
    Cap: Same as Sub-Lieutenant's morning dress.

  2. Morning Dress :-
    Jacket: Blue cloth, single-breasted, with nine buttons, and
    three notched holes on each cuff, with buttons to corre-
    spond; stand-up collar, with a white turn-back on each
    side of the collar, with notched hole and button.
    Buttons: As in full dress.
    Dirk: As in full dress.
    Knot: As in full dress.
    Belt: As in full dress.
    Cap: As in full dress.

Petty Officers, Leading Gunners, and Gunners.
Chief Petty Officer.

  1. Dress:-
    Long Jacket: Blue cloth, double-breasted, with four gilt
    uniform buttons of the same pattern as those for officers
    on each side; three buttons only to show on each side
    of the jacket, and there is to be only one button-hole in
    the collar-flap, the fourth button being under the collar-
    flap; stand-and-fall collar with pocket-flaps; length from
    lower part of collar to bottom edge, 28in. to 30in.,
    according to height of wearer. An opening on the cuff
    of the sleeve with the small gilt buttons.
    Waistcoat: Blue cloth single-breasted, no collar, with six
    gilt uniform buttons.
    Trousers: Made with flies, plain blue cloth, or white
    when ordered.
    Cap: Blue cloth, 8in. in diameter, with black-leather peak
    and black-mohair band, surmounted by crown and
    anchor; device embroidered in gold and silver.
    Shirt: White.
    Necktie: Black.
    Buttons: Same as for officers.

  2. Working Dress:-
    Long Jacket: Blue serge or duck, with uniform buttons as
    in dress, except that the duck jacket is to be single-
    breasted, and to show four buttons, and there is to be no
    button-hole in the collar-flap.
    Trousers: Blue cloth or white, as in dress.
    Shirt: Blue check.

Petty Officers of the First or Second Class, Leading Gunners, or
Gunners.

  1. Dress:-
    Round Jacket: Navy-blue cloth, double-breasted, with
    stand-and-fall collar; sleeves sufficiently large to go over
    a duck or serge frock; to reach to the hip; one inside
    pocket on the left side; with an opening at the cuffs on
    the seam with two small black buttons; and seven black-
    horn buttons of the same pattern as those for officers,
    3/4in. in diameter.
    Blue Trousers: Navy-blue cloth of the ordinary navy
    pattern, fitting tight at the waistband, with two pockets,
    and a broad flap, and stained-bone buttons; to be tied
    in at the back with black-silk ribbon.
    White Trousers: Duck of the same pattern, with white-
    metal dead-eye buttons; to be tied in at the back with
    white tape.
    White Frock: To be made of drill, with collar and wrist-
    bands of blue jean, the collar having a border of three
    waved lines of 3/8in. white tape, 1/8in. apart, and the
    wristbands to be peaked with two waved lines of white
    tape along the upper margin, and one along the lower,
    with one white-metal dead-eye button at each of the
    wrists.
    Collar to White Frock: Collar for white frock to be of the
    dimensions herein shown:-
