REGULATIONS RESPECTING NAVAL CADETS. FOR THE IN-
FORMATION OF CANDIDATES.


  1. The examinations will be held in London and at Ports-
    mouth, and will commence on the second Tuesday in June
    and the last Tuesday in November in each year, and the
    appointments will date from the 15th July and 15th January
    following respectively.

ance with "The Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1886."

MANAWATU ROAD BOARD.—RESULT OF POLLS.
A POLL taken on the 6th day of March, 1889, on a proposal
to borrow £400 for formation, culverting, and bridging on
Andrewartha's Road : —
Number of ratepayers entitled to vote, 12; voters for the
proposal, 8; voters against the proposal, 0; ratepayers not
voting, 4; majority in favour, 4. Number of votes that could
be exercised, 15; votes for the proposal, 10; votes against
the proposal, 0; informal vote, 1; votes not recorded, 4;
majority in favour, 5.

A poll taken on the 6th day of March, 1889, on a proposal
to borrow £200 for widening and metalling a portion of Fitz-
herbert Road East: —
Number of ratepayers entitled to vote, 9; voters for the
proposal, 6; voters against the proposal, 0; ratepayers not
voting, 3; majority in favour, 3. Number of votes that could
be exercised, 24; votes for the proposal, 16; votes against
the proposal, 0; informal vote, 1; votes not recorded, 7;
majority in favour, 8.

A poll taken on the 8th day of March, 1889, on a proposal
to borrow £250 for the construction of a portion of No. 4 Line,
and making side cuttings, and placing bush-log culverts or
bridges on the Teriteu Road, Fitzherbert West: —
Number of ratepayers entitled to vote, 7; voters for the
proposal, 5; voters against the proposal, 0; ratepayers not
voting, 2; majority in favour, 3. Number of votes that could
be exercised, 7; votes for the proposal, 5; votes against the
proposal, 0; ratepayers not voting, 2; majority in favour, 3.

As at each of the above polls a majority in number of the
ratepayers recorded a majority in number of the votes that
could be exercised, I hereby declare each and all of the pro-
posals carried.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold
fields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

  1. The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
    discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
    tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
    Middle Island.

  2. The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
    less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
    existing workings.

  3. No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
    have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
    within three years from the date of its being registered.

  4. Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
    desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
    a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
    the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
    which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
    Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
    application for reward.

  5. No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
    out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
    named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
    in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
    and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
    Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
    No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
    made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
    owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1890, the period of litera-
ture will be the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, and
the special books will be Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice,
and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield.

Zealand, Blockmaker, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for a wire clothes-peg, to be called
"Blakey's Improved Spring Clothes-peg."
No. 3593.—ROBERT MARTIN CROSBIE, of Nelson, New
Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification
of an invention for improved feed-rollers and chairs for flax-
stripping machine.
No. 3594.—FREDERICK BARKER HILL, of London, England,
Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in ice-making, cooling, and
refrigerating apparatus.
No. 3595.—FRANCES EDWARD WILSON, of Birmingham,
England, Safe Manufacturer, and CHARLES CURWEN WALKER,
of Acocks Green, Warwick, England, Surveyor, have de-
posited at this office a specification of an invention for
improvements in fastening- or locking-mechanism for safes
and strong-rooms.
