The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in January were 246, against 237 in December, an increase of 9.
The deaths amounted to 85, against 78 in December.
There were 12 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: a male of 65 died at Auckland; three males of 71, 68 (2),
and a female of 65 at Wellington; two males of 72 and 68, and two females of 73 and 71, at Christchurch; two males of 73
and 68, and a female of 66, at Dunedin.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal
specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These
causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important
special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely
connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—There was a slight increase in January in the number of deaths from these
diseases, from 7 in December to 11 in the past month, caused by a greater mortality, chiefly in Auckland, from diarrhœa.
Constitutional Diseases.—The mortality in January from these diseases was much less than that in the month pre-
ceding, namely, 15 deaths in January, against 24 in December. Of the 15 deaths, phthisis caused 12 and cancer 2; the
corresponding deaths having been in December—phthisis, 15; cancer, 4.
Local Diseases.—There was a considerable increase in January in the mortality from these diseases, the deaths having
been 46, against 34 in December. Diseases of the nervous system caused 16 deaths, against 5 in the previous month. Of
these, the deaths from apoplexy in January were 6. There was an increase of 2 in the number from diseases of the
circulatory system, but a decrease of 3 in the number from diseases of the respiratory system. Diseases of the digestive
system were more fatal, having caused 7 deaths, against 4 in December.
Violent Deaths.—There were 5 deaths from violent causes; of these, 2 were of persons drowned, and 1 death was
suicidal.
