Alteration in the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in
force on the New Zealand Railways.
THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in pursuance
of the powers conferred by "The Government Railways
Act, 1887," do hereby make the following alteration in the
scale of fares, rates, and charges on the New Zealand Rail-
ways, to come into force on and after the 1st March, 1889:-

PART IV. LOCAL RATES.
WANGANUI SECTION.
Cement, bridge iron, and waterworks plant, Foxton to
Palmerston, will be charged 8s. 6d. per ton, including
wharfage at Foxton. Minimum consignment, 25 tons.

PART VI.- WHARVES.
WANGANUI SECTION,
Foxton Wharf Rates.
Coal (Native), per ton, 1s.

Notice of Hearing of Application for a Patent.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 21st February, 1889.
PATENT for an invention for improvements in machines
for shearing or clipping animals, clipping the super-
fluous nap from carpets, and for shearing or clipping gene-
rally.
WILLIAM EVANS, of Palace Hotel, Melbourne, Victoria,
Commercial Traveller, and FREDERIC BURGON, of Fernbank,
Wisewood, Sheffield, England, Sheep-shear Manufacturer,
have deposited at this office a specification of the said in-
vention; and I have appointed Tuesday, the 20th day of
August next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to
hear the said application and all objections thereto; and
I require all persons having an interest in opposing the
grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 5th
day of August next, at this office, particulars in writing of
their objections to the said application, otherwise they will
be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3558.-WALTER BOOTH, of Oamaru, Otago, New Zea-
land, Inventor, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for an improved self-cleansing dripstone filter,
to be entitled "The Universal Filter."
No. 3559. GEORGE RAYMOND and ALBERT RAYMOND,
both of Chicago, Illinois, United States of America, Me-
chanics, have deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements relating to the pulverisation or
reduction of mineral or other substances, and to apparatus
therefor.
No. 3561.-ALBERT BERWICK CUNNINGHAM, of London,
England, Gentleman, has deposited at this office a specifi-
cation of an invention for improvements relating to the
extraction of gold, silver, and lead from substances contain-
ing the same, and to apparatus therefor.
No. 3562.-HUGH HEBER CHOLMONDELEY, of Piako, Auck-
land, New Zealand, Settler, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for a champion iron fencing-
wire strainer
And I have appointed Wednesday, the 5th day of June
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 21st day of
May next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.
