NOTES FOR JANUARY.

Auckland.—First half of month fine; from 17th to end showery; maximum rain on 7th ·65in.; prevailing S.W. wind
and moderate; N.E. gale on 6th; thunder on 7th.

Rotorua.—Generally a fine month with occasional showers; maximum rain on 7th ·66in. prevailing S.W. wind and
moderate, except strong on 6th, 26th, and 27th.

Wellington.—Generally bright weather and little rain, the maximum fall on 26th ·40in.; prevailing N.W. wind, and
stormy from that quarter on fifteen days; lightning on night of 25th, and slight hail on 31st.

Lincoln.—Showery with intervals of fine weather; maximum rainfall on 23rd ·886in.; prevailing winds from N.E., S.W.,
and N.W., and strong from latter quarter on 4th, 5th, and 19th.

Dunedin.—Pleasant weather but showery, especially during latter part, the maximum fall on 20th ·54in.; prevailing
S.W. wind and light, except on 16th and 31st, fresh.]

General Remarks.—A fine month, with rainfall under the average, and moderate wind. Meteor observed at Wellington
on 25th travelling eastward, and slight earthquake felt at Lincoln on 19th.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY.

Auckland.—Very fine with only a few showers, the maximum fall on 20th ·43in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate.

Rotorua.—Fine, bright weather; slight rain towards end of month; the maximum fall on 21st ·34in., and prevailing
wind S.W. and light.

Wellington.—Showery weather, with intervals of fine, bright, warm days; prevailing N.W. wind, and stormy on eight
days from that quarter; the maximum rain recorded on 20th 1·65in.

Lincoln.—Very heavy rain recorded on 20th, 1·368in., otherwise fine weather; wind variable and moderate, except
strong from S.W. on 3rd and 6th; thunder on 1st and 19th; hail on 1st.

Dunedin.—Showery at beginning and end of month, but some fine days; the maximum rainfall on 19th ·356in.; winds
prevailed from W. and S.W., and strong on 3rd, 10th, and 11th.

General Remarks.—Rainfall below the average, and temperature also under; on the whole fine weather. Earthquake
felt at Wellington, slight, on 17th, at 7 a.m.

NOTES FOR MARCH.

Auckland.—Fine up to 8th, but strong breeze and gale on, 7th, 8th, and 9th from N.E.; rain recorded on 9th 1·52in.,
and on 11th 1·40in.; remainder of month showery and unpleasant, with strong W. and S.W. winds, from which quarter it
prevailed; thunder on 11th and 28th; hail on 28th.

Rotorua.—A wet month, with prevailing S.W. wind, but moderate; maximum rain on 17th 1·25in.; hail on 30th.

Wellington.—Fine early part, showery during middle of month and towards end; maximum rain recorded on 20th
·80in.; prevailing N.W. wind, and generally strong and stormy on five days from that quarter; a squall on the evening of
27th with rain and hail, and a violent gale on afternoon of 28th from S.W., with heavy rain, hail, and sleet; considerable
damage done, and high tides; thunder on 16th and 17th.

Lincoln.—Showery, with some fine weather in the intervals; prevailing winds from N.E. and S.W., and strong on 28th
from S.W., and on 29th from N.E.; thunder on 16th; snow on 28th, and hail on 16th and 28th; maximum rainfall on 17th
·559in.

Dunedin.—On the whole a wet month, the greatest rain recorded on 17th 1·38in.; thunder on 12th and 27th; hail on
27th; prevailing wind from S.W. and moderate.

General Remarks.—Rainfall in excess of average generally, and temperature on the whole below the average for this
month. High wind prevailed. Earthquake at Wellington on 31st, at 7.30 a.m., slight, E. and W.

NOTES FOR APRIL.

Auckland.—Fine weather with showers early part and middle of month, the maximum fall recorded on 25th ·23in.;
strong S.W. wind on 15th and 16th, otherwise moderate, and prevailed from this quarter and from S.

Rotorua.—Fine with pleasant showers, the maximum rainfall recorded on 24th 1·05in.; winds from S. and S.W.

Wellington.—Fine up to 12th, but strong wind from N.W.; from 13th to 17th showery, 1·06in. recorded on 16th, the
maximum rainfall for month; fine from 18th to 24th, when rain set in, and continued to 27th; light wind; fine remainder
of month.

Lincoln.—Showery towards middle and end of month, the maximum rainfall on 24th ·933in., otherwise fine; wind
moderate, prevailing from S.W., often calm; fog on 9th, 22nd, and 23rd; peculiar sunsets observed on 26th and 27th.

Dunedin.—Pleasant weather with occasional showers, the maximum rainfall on 3rd ·344in.; prevailing S.W. and S.
winds.

General Remarks.—Rainfall about the average; temperature under average; generally fine weather. Earthquake at
Wellington on 3rd, at 6.50 a.m., smart, N. and S.; and on 21st, at 6.55 a.m., slight.

NOTES FOR MAY.

Auckland.—Heavy rain, the maximum on 12th 2·45in.; stormy on 10th, 11th, and 12th from N.E., from which quarter
wind prevailed; fog on 16th.

Rotorua.—Except first few days the month was very wet and unpleasant, the maximum rain recorded on 12th 1·98in.;
winds prevailed from S. and S.W. and moderate, often calm.

Wellington.—Very fine up to 11th, and light N.W. wind or calm; showery from 12th to 20th, and light wind; strong
N.W. wind on 20th and 21st, but otherwise fine up to 25th; showery from 26th to end of month, and strong S.W. wind
on 28th and 29th; maximum rain on 29th ·83in.; on the whole a pleasant month; fog on six days.

Lincoln.—Some heavy showers with intervals of fine; maximum rain on 14th 1·803in.; prevailing S.W. wind; fog on
five days.

Dunedin.—Fine early part, but showery and changeable latter part; maximum rain on 28th 1·378in.; prevailing S.W.
and S. winds and moderate; thunder on 21st; hail on 21st; fog on 9th, 10th, and 14th.

General Remarks.—About the average rainfall, though at some places in excess. Temperature about the average;
seasonable weather. Earthquakes—at Rotorua, on 29th, at 11.15 a.m., smart, and on 31st, at 2.15 p.m., smart; at Wel-
lington on 3rd, shakes, at 2.15 a.m. and 6.4 a.m., slight, and on 4th, at 5 a.m., slight, and two sharp shocks at 8.25 a.m.
Meteor on 4th observed in Wellington, brilliant; and lunar halo on 20th with brilliant colours. At Dunedin an aurora
observed on 11th.

NOTES FOR JUNE.

Auckland.—A wet month, the maximum rainfall recorded on 4th 1·01in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds and light; strong
E. wind on 5th; thunder on 16th and 26th.

Rotorua.—Prevailing S. winds and light; frequent calms; some fine days, but at times heavy showers; the maximum
rain on 4th 1·05in.

Wellington.—Early part of month pleasant weather with light showers and moderate wind; from 11th to 15th very
strong N.W. wind and showery, and from 16th to 26th showery, but with intervals of fine bright weather; strong wind from
N.W. on 22nd and 23rd; the maximum rain recorded on 25th ·41in.; remainder of month fine with bright S.E. wind or
calm; thunder on 22nd, and hail on 7th.

Lincoln.—Fine weather with showers towards end of month; maximum fall of rain recorded on 17th ·286in.; prevailing
winds N. and N.E.; snow on 7th, hail on 7th.

Dunedin.—A small total rainfall, although light showers during middle of month, the maximum fall recorded on 17th
·430in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds and moderate, except strong from N.W. on 11th, and from N.E. on 20th; lightning
on 11th; snow and hail on 7th.

General Remarks.—On the whole fine weather with moderate rain and wind, and the temperature about the average
for this time of year.
