New County of Pahiatua divided into Ridings, &c.

A PROCLAMATION.

I N exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by “The Counties Act, 1886,” and “The Counties Act Amendment Act, 1888,” I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby divide the new County of Pahiatua, as constituted by the said Acts, into five ridings, to be called the Mangahao Riding, the Pukemiku Riding, the Makuri Riding, the Mangaone Riding, and the Puketoi Riding, and that the boundaries thereof shall be those set forth under the names of the said ridings respectively in the Schedule hereto.

And I do hereby declare that the number of members to be elected for each of the said ridings shall be as follows: For the Mangaone Riding, two members; for the Puketoi Riding, two members; for the Mangahao Riding, one member; for the Pukemiku Riding, one member; and for the Makuri Riding, one member.

And I do further declare that Saturday, the twenty-fourth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight, shall be the day upon which the election of the first Council of the said County of Pahiatua shall take place; and that Wednesday, the twenty-eighth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight, at one o’clock in the afternoon, shall be the time, and the Road Board Office, Pahiatua, shall be the place, at which the first meeting of the said Council shall be held.

SCHEDULE.

PAHIATUA COUNTY.

Mangahao Riding.—Comprises all that portion of the Pahiatua County bounded towards the north-east by the County of Waipawa; towards the east generally by Blocks IV., VIII., and XII. respectively of the Mangahao Survey District to the north-eastern corner of Section No. 2, Block XI., of the said district; thence towards the south by the said Section No. 2 to the Mangatainoka River; thence towards the south-east by a line along the middle of that river and of the Makakahi River to a point opposite to the northermost corner of Section No. 20, Block XIV., Mangahao Survey District; thence towards the south-west by a right line to the easternmost corner of Horowhenua County, on the Tararua Range at Arawaru Mountain; and thence towards the north-west by the County of Oroua.

Pukemiku Riding.—Comprises all that portion of the Pahiatua County bounded towards the north by the County of Waipawa; towards the east generally by a line along the middle of the Tiraumea and the Mangatainoka Rivers, and by Blocks I., IV., and VIII. respectively of the Makuri Survey District; towards the south by Block XII., Mangahao Survey District; and towards the west by the Mangahao Riding, hereinbefore described.

Makuri Riding.—Comprises all that portion of the Pahiatua County bounded towards the north by the County of Waipawa; towards the east by the summit of the Puketoi Range to a point in line with the northern boundary-line of Block IX., Makuri Survey District; thence towards the south by a right line to and thence by the said block and Block VIII. of the said Makuri Survey District; and towards the west generally by Pukemiku Riding, hereinbefore described.

Mangaone Riding.—Comprises all that portion of the Pahiatua County bounded towards the north by the Ridings of Mangahao and Pukemiku, hereinbefore described; towards the east generally by Block VIII., Makuri Survey District, and a line along the middle of the Tiraumea River to a point in line with the northern boundary-line of Section No. 175, Block VIII., Mangaone Survey District; thence towards the south-west generally by the said Section No. 175 and the northern boundary-line of that section produced to the Pa Valley Road; thence by that road and Section No. 12, Block IV., Mangaone Survey District, to the Mangaone Stream; thence by that stream, by Section No. 31A of the said Block IV., Sections Nos. 31, 29, 9, 8, 7, and 6, Block III., and Sections Nos. 25, 20A, and 20, Block II., all of the said Mangaone Survey District; and towards the north-west by Mangahao Riding aforesaid.

Puketoi Riding.—Comprises all that portion of the Pahiatua County bounded towards the north by the Makuri Riding, hereinbefore described; towards the south-east by the summit of the Puketoi Range to trig. station, Puketoi; thence by a right line to the north-eastern corner of Section No. 61, Block VIII., Mangaone Survey District; thence towards the south by that section to the Tiraumea River; and thence towards the west by the Mangaone Riding and the Pukemiku Riding, hereinbefore described.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this sixteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight.
