that a new Royal ordinance, which came into operation on
the sixth day of January, one thousand eight hundred and
eighty-eight, stipulates that the owners of Dutch steamships
may have the net tonnage of their vessels calculated accord-
ing to British as well as according to Dutch rules, and shall
have issued to them a separate certificate, to be used in
foreign countries, showing the net tonnage calculated accord-
ing to British rules:
And whereas it has been made to appear desirable to Her
Majesty that the provisions of the said recited Order in Coun-
cil of the twenty-sixth day of October, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-five, should be revoked, and a new
Order in Council made and substituted in lieu thereof:
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in virtue of the powers vested
in her by the said recited Acts, and by and with the advice
of her Privy Council, is pleased to direct that the said
recited order of the twenty-sixth day of October, one thou-
sand eight hundred and seventy-five, shall be and the same
is hereby revoked, and in lieu thereof and in substitution
therefor Her Majesty is hereby pleased, by and with the
advice of her Privy Council, to direct as follows:—

As regards sailing-ships, that merchant sailing-ships of
the said Kingdom of the Netherlands, the measurement
whereof, after the said first day of January, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-six, has been ascertained and
denoted in the registers and other national papers of such
sailing-ships, testified by the date thereof, shall be deemed
to be of the tonnage denoted in such registers and other
national papers in the same manner, and to the same extent,
and for the same purpose in, to, and for which the tonnage
denoted in the certificate of registry of British sailing-ships
is deemed to be the tonnage of such ships. -
As regards steamships, that merchant-ships belonging
to the said Kingdom of the Netherlands which are propelled
by steam or any other power requiring engine room, the
measurement whereof shall, after the said first day of
January, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six, have
been ascertained and denoted in the registers and other
national papers of such steamships, testified by the dates
thereof, shall be deemed to be of the tonnage denoted
on such registers or other national papers in the same
manner, and to the same extent, and for the same purpose
in, to, and for which the tonnage denoted in the certificate
of registry of British ships is deemed to be the tonnage of
such ships: Provided, nevertheless, that, if the owner or
master of any such Dutch steamship desires the deduction
for engine room in his ship to be estimated under the rules
for engine-room measurement and deduction applicable to
British ships instead of under the Dutch rule, the engine
room shall be measured and the deduction calculated
according to the British rules; and that, in the event of
any such steamship possessing a certificate of tonnage or
other national paper issued as aforesaid on or after the sixth
day of January, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
eight, denoting the net registered tonnage of such ship under
the British rules, the ship shall be deemed to be of the ton-
age so denoted thereon.

Notice of Intention to take Land for the Construction of
Defence Works at Ngahauranga, in Block XII., Belmont
Survey District, Wellington Road District.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," and
"The Public Works Act 1882 Amendment Act, 1885," to
execute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of
works for the purpose of defence at Ngahauranga, in Block
XII., Belmont Survey District, Wellington Road District,
and for the purposes of such public work the land mentioned
in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken; and notice
is further given that the plans of the said works and of the
lands so required to be taken are deposited in the Public
Works Office, at Wellington, and are there open for inspec-
tion: And notice is hereby given that all persons affected
by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of
the said lands shall, if they have any well-grounded objec-
tions to the execution of the said public work or to the taking
of such lands, set forth the same in writing, and send such
writing, within forty days from the publication of this notice,
to the Minister for Public Works, Wellington.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold-
fields.—Amended Conditions.

REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
Middle Island. -
The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
existing workings. -
No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
within three years from the date of its being registered. -
Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
application for reward. -
No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.
Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under "The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886," notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of litera-
ture will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books
will be Shakespeare's Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb's
Essays of Elia.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have attended a
Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen
years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of
the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all
Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the
month preceding the date of the examination, and that have
attended a Native village school for the previous twelve
months. These scholarships are offered for competition to
Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations
of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as
printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supple-
mentary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the
current year. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 17th and 18th December, 1888.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary to the Education Department.
