Sale of Unclaimed Property.
Police Department (Commissioner’s Office),
Wellington, 7th August, 1888.
THE unclaimed property described hereunder, and now
in possession of the police at the stations named, will,
unless previously claimed, be sold by public auction, at the
respective police offices, on Saturday, the 25th instant, at
noon, in accordance with the police regulations:—
Auckland: Revolver and cartridges, double-barrelled gun,
ten pairs of socks, and sundries.
Tauranga: Saddle, one double- and one single-barrelled
gun, oar, and bridle.
Napier: Railway-lever open-faced metal watch, No. 78881,
makers Kohn and Co., with steel guard; open-faced silver
verge watch, maker Jennings, London, No. 975; and sundries.
Gisborne: Fur cape.
Wanganui: Waterproof coat.
Christchurch: Gold Geneva open-faced watch, silver open-faced watch, silver Geneva hunting-watch, and sundries.
Southbridge: Lifebuoy, and twenty mill-pecks.
Rangiora: Pair of hames.
Waiau: Sundries.
Oamaru: Gold ring, revolver; watch (apparently brass),
No. 7635; mathematical instruments; silver watch, No.
14722; and sundries.
Dunedin: Two counterpanes, waterproof coat, harness,
two table-covers, carpet, two pieces of oilcloth, and sundries.

NO. 3184.—THOMAS MOORE BRYANT, of Auckland, New
Zealand, Salesman, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for the better preservation of
butter and like substances for storage and export, to be called
“Safe-package Lining.”
No. 3185.—WILLIAM DOUSLIN, of Blenheim, New Zealand, Architect, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for salt- and mustard-cells, &c., in the outer
rim of ordinary plates.
No. 3186.—WALTER GUTHRIE, of Invercargill, New Zealand, Merchant, has deposited at this office a specification of
an invention for improvements in disc-harrow, to be known
as “The Standard Disc-harrow.”
No. 3187.—ALBERT ERNEST WOODHOUSE, of Amberley,
Canterbury, New Zealand, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for a pulverising attachment for
ploughs, to be known as “Woodhouse’s Pulveriser Attachment for Ploughs.”
No. 3188.—HENRY FITZPATRICK BETTS, of Reefton, Nelson,
New Zealand, Engineer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for a quartz-crushing, pulverising,
and gold-saving machine, styled “Betts’s Quartz-crushing,
Pulverising, and Gold-saving Machine.”
No. 3189.—THOMAS SCOTT and JOHN WILSON, of Dunedin,
New Zealand, Manufacturers of Blinds and Shutters, have
deposited at this office a specification of an invention for
improvements in self-coiling shutters.
And I have appointed Friday, the 25th day of January
next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 10th day of January
next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

No. 3191.—ALBERT SANFORD, of Rakino Island, Auckland,
New Zealand, Fish-curer, has deposited at this office a specification of an invention for preventing smoked schnapper and
other fish from getting mouldy, to be called “Red Pickled
Schnapper” (or other fish, as the case may be).
No. 3192.—FREDERICK EDWARD BOWEN, of Sydenham,
Canterbury, New Zealand, Painter, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for a wall-drying
bracket.
No. 3193.—ARCHIBALD GEORGE LAND, of Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand, Carpenter, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for Land’s Sheep-drafting
Machine.
And I have appointed Tuesday, the 29th day of January
next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear
the said applications and all objections thereto; and I require
all persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any
such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 14th day of
January next, at this office, particulars in writing of their
objections to any of the said applications, otherwise they
will be precluded from urging the same.

West, Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, Engineer, has
deposited at this office a specification of the said invention; and I have appointed Wednesday, the 22nd day of
May next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to
hear the said application and all objections thereto; and
I require all persons having an interest in opposing the
grant of such Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 7th
day of May next, at this office, particulars in writing of
their objections to the said application, otherwise they will
be precluded from urging the same.

the 24th day of January next, at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said application and all

Civil Service Senior Examination.
Education Department,
Wellington, 7th February, 1888.
IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1889, the period of literature will be the age of Queen Anne, and the special books
will be Shakespeare’s Henry IV. and Henry V., and Lamb’s
Essays of Elia.

Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have attended a
Native school during the previous year, and are under sixteen
years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of
the examination; the other two scholarships are open to all
Maoris that are under fifteen years of age at the end of the
month preceding the date of the examination, and that have
attended a Native village school for the previous twelve
months. These scholarships are offered for competition to
Maori youths, on the conditions laid down in the regulations
of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as
printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supplementary regulations sent out to all teachers in May of the
current year. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 17th and 18th December, 1888.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary to the Education Department.
