Alterations in and Additions to the Scale of Charges in
force on the New Zealand Railways.
IN accordance with section 144 of "The Public Works
Act, 1882," I, Edwin Mitchelson, the Minister for
Public Works, do hereby make the following alterations in
and additions to the scale of charges, to come into force
from and after the 23rd day of July, 1888:—
PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.
AUCKLAND SECTION.
The following rates will be charged at per ton on goods of
Classes A, B, C, D, carried from Auckland or Newmarket
to the stations named :—

Notice of Intention to take Land for a Road alongside
Livingstone Branch Railway.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882," to
execute a certain public work, to wit, the construction of
a road in the County of Waitaki, and for the purposes of
such public work the lands described in the Schedule hereto
are required to be taken; and notice is further given that
the plans of the said road and of the lands so required to be
taken are deposited in the Post Office at Windsor, and are
there open for inspection. And notice is hereby given that all
persons affected by the execution of the said public work or
by the taking of the said lands shall, if they have any well-
grounded objections to the execution of the said public work
or to the taking of such lands, set forth the same in writing,
and send such writing, within forty days from the first pub-
lication of this notice, to the Minister for Public Works,
Wellington.

All in the Provincial District of Otago ; as the said parcels of
land are more particularly delineated on the plan marked
P.W.D. 15508, deposited in the office of the Minister for
Public Works, at Wellington, in the Provincial District of
Wellington, and thereon coloured purple.

Reward of £10,000 offered for the Discovery of New Gold-
fields.—Amended Conditions.

Wellington, 30th April, 1888.
REWARDS of £10,000 are offered for the discovery of new
goldfields, upon the amended conditions set forth
hereunder.

AMENDED CONDITIONS.

The maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved
discovery of a new goldfield in accordance with these condi-
tions is £5,000 for the North Island, and £5,000 for the
Middle Island. -
The newly-discovered goldfield must be situated not
less than forty miles from any existing goldfield or any
existing workings. -
No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold
have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield
within three years from the date of its being registered. -
Any person discovering new gold-workings, and being
desirous of obtaining the reward, shall immediately forward
a written report of such discovery, with full particulars, to
the Warden or Resident Magistrate of the district within
which such discovery shall be situated, and the Warden or
Resident Magistrate shall forthwith register the report as an
application for reward. -
No prospecting will be allowed upon Native land with-
out a prospecting license authorising the person therein
named, with the consent of the owner of the land, to prospect,
in accordance with the provisions of sections one hundred
and thirty-five to one hundred and thirty-seven of "The
Mining Act, 1886," inclusive.
No reward shall be paid for any discovery that may be
made upon Native land without the consent of the Native
owners and the approval of the Minister of Mines.
Money Order and Savings Bank Office opened.

Notice of Hearing of Applications for Patents.
Patent Office,
Wellington, 16th July, 1888.
NO. 3105.—JOHN HEDLEY, of Spottiswood, Victoria,
Hydraulic and General Mining Engineer, has depo-
sited at this office a specification of an invention for an im-
proved electro-chemical apparatus for chlorinating ores and
depositing the chlorides resulting therefrom, to be entitled
"Hedley's Electro-chemical Hydraulic Chlorinator."
No. 3108.—CLEMENT KIND, of Christchurch, New Zealand,
Diesinker and Toolmaker, and HENRY SELWOOD AUSTIN, of
the same place, Solicitor, have deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for making the spout, bottom,
and body of teakettles, teapots, or other vessels of a similar
character, in any metal of one piece, instead of soldering the
spout and bottom on to the body, or making the spout,
bottom, and body of the vessel in three separate pieces as
heretofore.
No. 3109.—EDWARD JAMES CACKETT, of Panmure, Auck-
land, New Zealand, Milkman, has deposited at this office a
specification of an invention for more conveniently packing
eggs or butter, or either of them, in one box, to be called
"Cackett's Patent Combination Egg- and Butter-box."
No. 3110.—EDWARD PROBERT, of San Francisco, California,
United States of America, Capitalist, has deposited at this
office a specification of an invention for improvements in
process of working auriferous and argentiferous arsenides,
sulphides, and furnace-slags.
No. 3111.—PHILIP ALFRED RIVE, of Wellington, New
Zealand, has deposited at this office a specification of an
invention for improvements in tins or cans for preserving
perishable articles.
No. 3112.—PHILIP BLAMPID, of Kyber Pass, Auckland,
New Zealand, Bootmaker, and JOHN HENRY HAWES, of
Flower Street, Eden Terrace, Auckland aforesaid, Bootmaker,
have deposited at this office a specification of an invention
for an improved reversible combination last-stand.
And I have appointed Tuesday, the 4th day of December
next, at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the
said applications and all objections thereto ; and I require all
persons having an interest in opposing the grant of any such
Letters Patent to leave, on or before the 19th day of November
next, at this office, particulars in writing of their objections
to any of the said applications, otherwise they will be pre-
cluded from urging the same.
