Totals

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 462, against 441 in March, an increase of 21. The deaths in April were 197, an increase of 52 on the number for March. Of the total deaths, males contributed 111; females, 86. Seventy-one of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 36·04 per cent. of the whole number; 54 of these were under 1 year of age.

  • The population for Auckland is that estimated for the 1st January, 1887. The information supplied as to the number of inhabited houses in January of the present year is not sufficiently accurate to be used in calculating population. The figures for 1887 are believed to be in excess of the actual fact. It has been deemed unsafe to give any death-rate, as the proportion could not be relied upon.

The following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, that were registered during the Month of April, 1888.
