IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the third section of “The Land Act Amendment Act, 1887” (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection, after the lapse of a period of forty-five days from the date of the first public notification hereof, in the manner and upon the conditions mentioned in the said Act, and at the price per acre respectively set opposite such land in the said Schedule.

Description of Land: These sections are part of the West Waitapu Block, and are situated at the back of the Kiwitea Settlement, near Williamson’s, about eighteen miles from Feilding and Halcombe; the available road-access is by metalled cart-roads to within one and a quarter miles, and thence by a horse-road to a point half-way through the block. The country consists of flat, undulating, and low hills; the soil is first class and the sections are fairly well watered; whole area is covered by mixed bush—rata, rimu, tawa, &c., and usual undergrowth, with totara trees scattered in places.

Description of Land: These sections are situated in the Mangaone Valley, about seven miles from the main road between Eketahuna and Woodville; the area comprises undulating land, low hills, and broad flats. The soil is of good quality; the forest trees are principally tawa, with rimu, rata, &c., and the usual undergrowth. The access is by the Hawera-Mangaone cart-road to within two miles of the block.

Description of Land: The above blocks are situated west of Mauriceville Settlement, adjacent to the Wellington Special-settlement Association Block, and comprise hilly, undulating, flat, and some rough hill lands. The soil varies from fair to good, the forest consists of rimu, rata, tawhero, &c., and some birch, white-pine, and totara in parts. There are good flats in the northern and eastern sections. Access to the blocks obtainable from the Forty-mile Bush Road by Hefty’s Branch Line.
Mangaone-Tiraumea Block.—Unsurveyed.
Blocks IV. and VIII., Mangaone Survey District, and Block XVI., Mangahao Survey District, 10,500 acres; cash price from 20s. to 30s. an acre.
Description of Land: The area comprised in this block is situated north of Alfredton, and falls between the Tiraumea Valley and the Pahiatua-Mangaone Settlements, and consists of flats, low hills, and undulating land on the Mangaone Valley side, and of flats and higher hills broken to some extent towards the Tiraumea Valley and Alfredton; the soil varies in quality from fair to very good; the forest comprises principally tawa, rimu, and rata, and the usual undergrowth; access is available by the Alfredton and Hawera Settlement roads to within about two miles of the block.
Blocks VI. and X., Kopuaranga Survey District, 2,500 acres; cash price, 20s. an acre.
Description of Land: This area forms part of the Rangitumau Block, fronting on Barton’s Wangaehu Road-line, between Mawley’s Run and Perry’s Clearing. The country is hilly, the soil good, resting on limestone and papa formation, and is covered throughout with mixed forest, rimu, rata, tawa, matai, hinau, maire, &c., and usual undergrowth. The access is by Dreyer’s Rock Road to within four miles of the block.
West Waitapu Block.
Blocks X., XI., XII., XIV., XV., and XVI., Ongo Survey District, and Blocks IX. and XIII., Apiti Survey District, 13,000 acres; prices, 20s. to 30s. an acre.
Description of Land: This block is situated at the back of and adjacent to the Kiwitea Settlements, between the Kiwitea and Rangitikei Rivers, about eighteen miles from Feilding and Halcombe; access is available by cart-roads to within one and a quarter miles of the block, and a horse-road has been partly formed about three miles farther. The area comprises hilly undulating country with flats in places, fairly well watered; the soil varies from first-class to good; and the whole area is covered with mixed forest, comprising rimu, rata, tawa, &c., with totara trees in places.

Maungakaretu Block.—Unsurveyed.
Block XVI., Ngamatea, Block XIII., Maungakaretu, Blocks IV. and VIII., Mangawhero, and Blocks I. and V., Tiri raukawa Survey District, 10,000 acres; price, 10s. per acre.
Description of Land: The lands comprised in this block consist of high hills with broken or easy faces merging into undulating and flat lands in some parts of the Mangamahu and Turakina Valleys. The soil is generally of good loamy quality overlying papa slightly intermixed with limestone. The forest includes rimu, rata, hinau, tawa, tawhero, maire, matai, kahikatea, &c., with some birch and totara in places, and is sufficient generally for homestead purposes, but some of the ridges are timbered with smaller trees such as hinau, rewarewa, manuka, titoki, &c.; the undergrowth includes karamu, konini, akeake, wharangi, mahoe, &c. The block is well watered by the Mangamahu and Turakina Streams, and is accessible by Hales’s Murimotu Track, which has been partly formed to near the southern boundary.
