poll of the ratepayers of the Oamaru Harbour District, taken
on the 7th day of April, 1888, on the proposal of the Oamaru
Harbour Board to issue a loan for the sum of £40,000,
authorised to be borrowed by section 4 of the said Act—the
proceeds of such loan to be expended upon the purposes
mentioned in said section 4, namely, to discharge liabilities of
the Board existing on the 23rd December, 1887, not being un-
matured debentures or mortgages, and to repair and strengthen
the breakwater; such loan to be secured upon a rate made
and levied under the provisions of the said Act on the 20th
day of January, 1888, and on any balance of the income of
the Board, after payment of prior charges thereon—were as
follows: For the proposal, 419 votes; against the proposal,
67 votes.

The number of votes given for the proposal exceeding the
number given against it by more than one-fourth of the
latter, I hereby declare the resolution in favour of the pro-
posal to be carried.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Whatapoko Road
Board, County of Cook.

THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the
Whatapoko Road Board, is published in accordance
with “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

NOTICE is hereby given that, at a poll of the ratepayers of
this district, taken this day, upon a proposal to borrow
£2,300 under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act,
for public works in the district, the following votes were
recorded:—

In favour of the proposal, 107 ratepayers, exercising 120
votes; against the proposal, 4 ratepayers, exercising 4 votes.
Total number of ratepayers on the roll, 206, capable of
exercising 221 votes.

As a majority in number of the ratepayers voted in favour
of the proposal, and the number so voting are entitled to
more than one-half of the number of votes which can be
exercised by the whole number of ratepayers, I therefore
declare the proposal carried.

Application for Registration of a Trade Mark.

NOTICE is hereby given that EDWARD WATERS, Patent
Agent, of Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, has
applied, on behalf of RICHARD CLARKSON SCOTT, trading as
“Fritz and Co.,” of 36, Fleet Street, Liverpool, in the
County of Lancaster, England, Manufacturing Chemist, to
register under “The Trade Marks Act, 1866,” the trade
mark of which the following is a description:—

Description of Trade Mark.

The essential feature of this trade mark consists of the
words “Salt Regal” or “Saline Regal.” These are generally
arranged on a label, in which the words “Fritz’s Salt Regal
or Saline Regal, an effervescent white powder which changes
colour and develops ozone upon being dissolved in water,”
are displayed in conspicuous characters. Above these is
the representation of a liver, and below is the manufacturer’s
name and address; a representation of a liver is also placed
in each of the four corners of the label. Printed down the
sides of the label are remarks on the beneficial properties of
the medicine, and to the right is a report as to the purity of
the ingredients by Professor Norman Tate, F.I.C.

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.

NOTICE is hereby given that EDWARD WATERS, Patent
Agent, of Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, has
applied, on behalf of LEVER BROTHERS, of Warrington, in
the County of Lancaster, England, Soap Manufacturers, to
register, under “The Trade Marks Act, 1866,” the trade
mark of which the following is a description:—

Description of Trade Mark.

It consists of a wrapper, at the head of which are the
words “Sunlight Soap!” and which contains an explanation
why “so many women look old while yet young in years.”
This explanation is printed in small type with certain words
printed larger than the others, so that when those words in
large type are read without reference to the remainder of
the text they form a catch sentence, reading “Why does a
woman look old sooner than a man?” The wrapper con-
cludes with a description of the “Sunlight way of washing.”

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.

transmit to you, for information and publication in the
colony under your Government, a copy of the Superannua-
tion Act, 1887, and of the rules drawn up by the Treasury
under clause 6 thereof.

EXTRACTS from the RULES drawn up by the TREASURY
under Clause 6 of “The Superannuation Acts Amend-
ment Act, 1887.”

WHEREAS by the Superannuation Act, 1887, the Commis-
sioners of Her Majesty’s Treasury are authorised to frame
rules as to the conditions on which any civil employment of
profit under any public department or any employment of
profit under the Government of any British possession, or
any employment under the Government of any foreign State
may be accepted by any person who is in receipt of any sum
granted by Parliament for the pay, half-pay, or retired pay of
officers of Her Majesty’s naval or military forces, regular or
auxiliary, or otherwise, for past service in such forces, or who
has commuted the right to receive the same or has retired
with a gratuity, and otherwise, as in the said Act men-
tioned:

And whereas the general principle adopted by Parliament
has been that where any person receiving non-effective pay
on account of service to the State accepts fresh State em-
ployment, the State should benefit by some saving upon the
