NOTES FOR JULY.
Auckland.—Showery weather; the maximum rainfall on 30th, ·81in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate, a few fine days early part of month; thunder on 23rd.
Rotorua.—Fine up to 6th, then showery weather, with a few fine days at intervals; the maximum rainfall on 19th, 1·02in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds and moderate.
Wellington.—Fine at commencement, during middle, and end of month, but on the whole wet weather; the maximum rainfall recorded on 7th, 1·55in.; prevailing northerly winds, and strong on 4th, 5th, 6th. and 7th from N.W., and on 20th and 21st from S.E.; lightning on 26th; fog on 20th, 21st, and 22nd.
Lincoln.—A wet month, although a few fine days at commencement and middle; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 19th and 20th; snow on 20th and 21st; hail on 21st; fog on 30th.
Dunedin.—Wet and changeable weather, very showery early part; maximum rainfall on 7th, 1·42in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 18th, otherwise moderate; snow on 21st; fog on 5th.
General Remarks.—Generally a wet month. Temperature about the average. Prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds, and stormy at times.
NOTES FOR AUGUST.
Auckland.—Generally fine weather; rain below the average, the maximum fall on 10th, ·44in.; winds prevailed from S. and S.W., and moderate.
Rotorua.—Showery early part, but fine for remainder of month; maximum rainfall on 8th, ·66in.; prevailing southerly winds and moderate.
Wellington.—With the exception of a few days, very wet weather up to the 17th; frequently heavy rain, the maximum recorded on 2nd, 1·95in.; strong winds from N. on 1st, from S.W. on 2nd, and N.W. on 6th, also on 12th, 13th, and 14th from S.E., from which quarter it prevailed; thunder on 12th; snow on hills on 12th, 13th, and 14th; hail on five days.
Lincoln.—Showery, with intervals of fine days; maximum rainfall on 2nd, ·814in.; wind strong on 1st from N.W., and on 12th from S.W., otherwise moderate; snow on 12th and 23rd; hail on 12th; fog on 28th and 31st; prevailing winds N.E. and S.W.
Dunedin.—Generally showery weather with prevailing S.W. wind and moderate, except strong on 12th; maximum rainfall on 8th, ·942in.; snow on 12th and 23rd; hail on 12th.
General Remarks.—Except in north, rainfall over the average, and temperature below; on the whole a wet, squally, cold month. Earthquake at Wellington on 13th, at 6.35 a.m., slight.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER.
Auckland.—Showery early part, fine during middle of month, and again showers at end; the maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, ·71in.; prevailing W. and S.W. winds, and strong from former quarter on ·3rd, 8th, 10th, and 12th, and on the 16th from N.E.; thunder on 12th and 13th; hail on 13th.
Rotorua.—Very wet weather almost throughout; winds chiefly S.W.; a few fine days at beginning and middle of month; maximum rainfall recorded on 27th, ·91in.
Wellington.—Very showery changeable weather almost throughout the month, at times bright, but frequent showers; the maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, ·70in.; prevailing southerly and N.W. winds, and strong on five days from latter quarter; thunder on 2nd, and lightning on 4th and 11th; hail on 14th and 30th, and snow on hills on 30th.
Lincoln.—Frequent showers, especially in beginning of month, but small total rainfall; the maximum on 25th, ·606in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and on whole moderate; thunder on 13th, 23rd, and 24th; snow on 14th; hail on 13th, 14th, and 24th; rather a cold severe month.
Dunedin.—Wet during first half and end of month; fine during middle, with light winds; stormy on 7th, from N.E., and on 13th from S.W., from which quarters the wind prevailed; snow and hail on 13th, 14th, and 29th; fog on 2nd and 24th.
General Remarks.—A wet, stormy, and cold month generally.
NOTES FOR OCTOBER.
Auckland.—Showery with short intervals of fine weather; maximum rainfall on 13th, ·60in.; stormy on 8th and 13th from N.E., on 14th from N.W., and on 24th from W.; prevailing winds from N.E. and S.W.
Rotorua.—During the middle portion of month very heavy rains, otherwise fine; maximum rainfall on 10th, 1·86in.; snow on 2nd; thunder and hail on 13th; winds variable and fresh.
Wellington.—Showery up to 6th, with prevailing S.E. wind and strong; hail on 1st, fine on 7th, 8th, and 9th, then showery up to 15th, the maximum rainfall occurring on 11th, 2·35in.; from 16th to 18th fine, then showery to 25th, with strong N.W. winds, and remainder of month fine with moderate winds; prevailing N.W. winds, and strong from that quarter on nine days; on the whole unpleasant, changeable, stormy weather; thunder on 21st; fog on 28th.
Lincoln.—Intervals of heavy showers and fine weather during the month; the maximum rainfall recorded on 11th, 1·336in.; prevailing winds from N.E., S.W., and N.W., and stormy on eight days; snow and hail on 10th and 11th; a stormy unpleasant month.
Dunedin.—A few fine days in early and latter part of month, but otherwise showery; the maximum rainfall on 11th, 1·660in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, strong on 20th and 21st; hail on 2nd.
General Remarks.—Rainfall in excess of average, and generally cold stormy weather during this period. Earthquake at Wellington on 6th, at 7 a.m. and 10.30 p.m., slight.
NOTES FOR NOVEMBER.
Auckland.—Showery, but some fine weather at intervals; greatest rainfall recorded on 15th, ·85in.; prevailing S.W. winds, and stormy on 11th from N.E.; winds generally moderate.
Rotorua.—A fine month, with light showers at intervals; maximum rainfall on 13th, ·41in.; prevailing S.W. winds and moderate.
Wellington.—On the whole unpleasant weather, very showery during first half; the maximum rainfall recorded on 16th, 1·15in.; prevailing N.W. wind, and frequently strong; some fine days at intervals.
Lincoln.—A wet month, with but few fine days; maximum rainfall on 8th, 1·306in.; prevailing S.W. winds, and strong on three days.
Dunedin.—Showery and cold weather, with prevailing S.W. wind and moderate, except strong on 16th from N.E., and on 26th from S.W.; hail on 18th and 24th; maximum rainfall on 13th, ·642in.
General Remarks.—A cold and rather unpleasant month for time of year. Earthquakes recorded at Rotorua on 13th, slight, and at Wellington on 11th, at 2 a.m., smart. Meteors observed in south on 9th, N.E. to S.W.
NOTES FOR DECEMBER.
Auckland.—Fine weather generally; small rainfall, the maximum occurring on 13th, ·64in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds and moderate, except a strong W. gale on 3rd.
Rotorua.—Showery in early part, but otherwise fine weather; maximum rainfall on 10th, ·76in.; wind chiefly from S.W., and no storms recorded.
Wellington.—Early part showery, with prevailing S.E. wind, and strong on 5th; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 1·50in.; middle of month fine, with generally N.W. wind, and strong from that quarter on five days, latter part of month showery; thunder on 11th; winds prevailed from S.E. and N.W.
Lincoln.—Showery for few days at beginning and end of month, remainder very fine; maximum rainfall on 5th, ·357in.; strong wind on 6th from S.W., on 8th from N.E., and on 27th from S.W., from which quarters it prevailed; fog on 16th.
Dunedin.—With the exception of showers at commencement and end of month, the weather was fine and bright, with prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and moderate; strong wind on 4th and 7th from N.E.; fog on 2nd and 3rd.
General Remarks.—Small total rainfall during this period, but weather generally windy and cold for time of year. Earthquake at Rotorua on 18th, at 11.30 p.m., slight.
