ENTRY OF ENGINEER STUDENTS IN HER MAJESTY'S NAVAL SERVICE.

(Memo.)

My Lords have directed, in reference to impending changes
in the regulations for the entry and training of engineer
students, that no entries are to be made this year, 1888.

It is in contemplation to admit a limited number of
engineer students in 1889.

The maximum age for that year only will be extended
to seventeen.

The revised regulations will shortly be issued.

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Hawera Riding, County

of Hawera.

The following notice, received from the Chairman of
the Hawera County Council, is published in accord-
ance with "The Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1886."

Result of Poll under "The Local Bodies' Loans Act,

1886."

The following is the result of a poll taken at Hawera, on
Saturday, the 31st March, 1888, on the proposal to borrow
£1,500 under the above Act, for widening and extending the
Main South Road, £1,000, and Hawera-Normanby Road,
£500, within the Hawera Riding, exclusive of the Normanby
Town District:—

Number of ratepayers on roll, 97; representing votes, 197.
Number of ratepayers voted, 72; number of votes recorded,
147; number of votes in favour, 139; number of votes
against, 1; informal, 7.

As more than one-half of the ratepayers of the Hawera
Riding, excluding the Normanby Town District, voted for
the proposal, recording more than one-half of the votes, I
hereby declare the proposal carried.

Application for Registration of Four Trade Marks.

Notice is hereby given that Messrs. BELL, GULLY,
AND IZARD, of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zea-
land, Solicitors, have applied, on behalf of JAMES PRICE
GOULSTONE, of Flinders Lane, in the City of Melbourne,
Colony of Victoria, Tea Merchant, to register, under "The
Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade marks of which the
following are descriptions:—

Description of Trade Mark No. 1.

A label on one half of which is an oblong, in the centre of
which is a representation of a star formed of leaves sur-
rounded by four flowers on a dark circular ground, the rest
of the oblong being filled in with floral device, the whole of
which is on a darkly-shaded ground; on the other half of
which is an oblong with the words "Celestial Mixture"
printed in deep black letters on a scroll, with the word
"Celebrated" printed above; the rest of the oblong being
filled in with light shading and floral device.

Description of Trade Mark No. 2.

A label on one half of which is an oblong containing a
view of a large building with a garden in front, intending to
represent the International Exhibition buildings, printed in
red; on the other half of which is an oblong containing the
words "International Mixture," in red letters, with a seg-
ment of a circle above the words and another segment
below, in red ink; the rest of the oblong being filled in with
light-red shading.

Description of Trade Mark No. 3.

A four-sided label on one side of which is an oblong con-
taining a picture intending to represent a Chinese woman
holding a cup of tea in her hand, which picture is represented
in a reddish tint on a background of the same coloured
shading; on another side an oblong with the words "Orion
Brand" printed in letters of a reddish colour across the
centre on a white ground, with the word "Unrivalled" in
white letters on a reddish ground above it, and the words
"Packet Teas" in white letters on a reddish ground below,
with a star of reddish outline and white centre at each
extremity of the words "Orion Brand," with a picture of
part of a Chinese pagoda in the centre intersected by the
printed matter; on another side the picture of two Chinese
figures on a reddish ground, one with a basket of tea in front
of him, and the other with a basket in his hand; on the
other side an oblong containing the words "Star Brand
Packet Teas" in white letters on a reddish ground stretch-
ing across the middle on scrolls, and in the centre of the
oblong a circle with a star in the centre of it, the circle and
star being outlined in a reddish colour on a white ground,
with representations of ferns and tropical plants filling in
the rest of the oblong.

Description of Trade Mark No. 4.

A label on one half of which is an oblong with the repre-
sentation of a clock in the centre, with the figure of a China-
man on the right side of the clock, and of a Hindoo on the
left side, both of them being in a sitting posture, with
packets of tea lying about in front; and on the left side the
representation of a Chinese pagoda in the rear on the right
side, with the words "The Tea of the Times" printed on the
top of the label in white letters on a dark ground, the rest
of the oblong being filled in with dark shading; on the
other half an oblong with the words "The Tea of the Times"
within a circle printed in black letters on an interwoven
scroll, the centre with the letters "No." on the left side,
and the figures "1," "2," or "3," as the case may be, on the
other side, showing the number of the quality of the tea
which is contained in the packet; the letters being sur-
rounded by circular lines with flowers and ferns outside.

The applicant reserves to himself the right to increase or
decrease the size of the said trade marks, and to depict the
same in any other colour or colours.

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade

Marks shall apply.

COMPANY, of Stockton, California, United States of America,
Manufacturers, to register, under "The Trade Marks Act,
1866," the trade mark of which the following is a descrip-
tion:—

to be Town Clerk of the Borough of Birkenhead, and also
Returning Officer to conduct the first election of Mayor and
six Councillors of the said borough; also to appoint
Thursday, the 17th May, 1888, to be the day for holding the
said first election of Mayor, and Friday, the 18th May, 1888,
to be the day for holding the said first election of six Coun-
cillors; and also to appoint Wednesday, the 23rd May, 1888,
at 7.30 p.m., to be the time, and the Wesleyan Schoolroom,
Birkenhead, to be the place for holding the first meeting of
the Council of the Borough of Birkenhead.

Alteration in the Scale of Charges in force on the New

Zealand Railways.

In accordance with section 144 of "The Public Works
Act, 1882," I, Thomas Fergus (the Minister acting
for the Minister for Public Works), do hereby make the fol-
lowing alteration in the scale of charges, to come into force
from and after the 9th day of April, 1888:—

Rates, including labour: Native bark, packed, 1s. per ton.
