Customs Holidays.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint Monday, the 26th December instant, and Monday, the 2nd January, 1888, to be Customs holidays throughout the colony.

Certain Articles exempted from Duty.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the power in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Duties Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, George Fisher, Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby order that the goods hereunder specified, being materials which are suited only for and are to be used and applied solely in the fabrication of goods within the colony, shall be exempt from duty on the importation thereof into the colony, namely,—

Reversible silk mixtures, laventine silk mixtures, alpaca cloth with border, and zanella cloth with border, not less than 44in. in width; umbrella-sticks, runners, notches, caps, ferrules, cups, ribs, stretchers, tips, and rings for use in the making of umbrellas and parasols.

Alteration in the Scale of Charges in force on the New Zealand Railways.

IN accordance with section 144 of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” I, Edwin Mitchelson, the Minister for Public Works, do hereby make the following alteration in the scale of charges, to come into force on and after the 12th December, 1887:—

PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.

HURUNUI—BLUFF SECTION.

Class H.—Wool.

Wool, undumped, from Dunback to Dunedin or Port Chalmers, will be charged 4d. per bale less than the classified rates.

Authorising the Reefton Electrical Transmission of Power and Lighting Company (Limited) to erect an Electric Line.

IN exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by “The Electric Lines Act, 1884,” I, Harry Albert Atkinson, the Electric Telegraph Commissioner appointed under the said Act, do hereby authorise and license the Reefton Electrical Transmission of Power and Lighting Company (Limited), of Reefton, New Zealand, to erect, construct, and maintain an electric line from the dynamo-house of the company, on the south side of the Inangahua River, across the said river, along Ross Street, along Shiel Street, by overhead line; by cable from the western corner of the post office block to the north-east corner of Section 400, at the corner of Bridge Street and Buller Road, and from thence along the north-east side of Buller Road, by overhead wire; along Smith and Sinnamon Streets and Broadway by overhead wire; joining those circuits with Buller Road circuit by means of underground cable where such electric lines cross Government telegraph wires; for the purposes of electric lighting.

And I do hereby declare that this license shall come into force on and after the date of publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette.

Bonus for Canned and Cured Fish for Export.

Treasury Department,
Wellington, 10th November, 1885.

IT is hereby notified that bonuses under “The Fisheries Encouragement Act, 1885,” as set forth in the following sections (Nos. 8, 9, and 10) of that Act, will be paid subject to the conditions named therein, and in the regulations contained in the Order in Council of even date herewith.

  1. In order to encourage the production and curing of fish for export, the Colonial Treasurer shall during the next seven years after the passing of this Act, without further appropriation by Parliament, pay out of the Consolidated Fund to any person who shall prepare canned and cured fish for export, and actually export the same from the colony, a bonus or bonuses upon the quantity of canned and cured fish prepared and exported by such person as hereinafter mentioned, that is to say,—

(1.) In respect of the first 200 tons avoirdupois of fish canned with or without oil, the sum of 1d. per pound, the weight of the cans not to be included in the tonnage upon which such bonus is paid;

(2.) In respect of every ton avoirdupois of fish canned as aforesaid beyond the first 200 tons, the sum of ½d. per pound, the weight of the cans not to be included in the tonnage upon which such bonus is paid;

(3.) In respect to cured fish the bonus to be paid shall be respectively ¼d. and ⅛d. a pound under similar conditions, as far as the same are applicable to those contained in the two last subsections.

  1. The total tonnage upon which the Treasurer may grant bonuses as aforesaid under this Act shall not exceed 6,000 tons.

  2. Every person intending to apply for the grant of a bonus shall register a special trade-mark under the laws for the time being in force in New Zealand providing for the registration of trade-marks, such trade-mark to be used for all cured and canned fish to be prepared for export by such person, and shall, within six years after the passing of this Act, give notice to the Treasurer of his intention to export canned and cured fish with a view to applying for a bonus, and shall append to such notice a copy of such trade-mark and all cases, barrels, or cans containing fish cured and canned for export by any such person shall, before exportation, be marked with the trade-mark so registered by him, and no part of any such bonus shall be payable except in respect of cases, barrels, or cans so marked.


Progress-payments for Exported Fish.

Wellington, 24th September, 1886.

WITH reference to the notification in the New Zealand Gazette of the 12th November, 1885, respecting the payment of bonuses to persons who prepare canned and cured fish for export under regulations published on the same date, it is hereby notified that progress-payments on account of such bonuses, claimed in accordance with those regulations, will now be made by this department. Claims to be for quantities not less than one ton net weight, and to be sent through the Collector of Customs at the port from which the fish was exported.

Application to proclaim the Teremakau and Arahura Rivers and their Tributaries a Watercourse for the Deposit of Tailings.

NOTICE.—In pursuance of the powers vested in him by section one hundred and fifty-four of “The Mining Act, 1886,” His Excellency the Governor directs it to be notified that application has been made to him to proclaim the watercourses known as the Teremakau and Arahura Rivers, in the Provincial District of Westland, and their tributaries, to be watercourses into which tailings, mining débris, and waste water of every kind used in, upon, or discharged from any claim or licensed holding adjacent to such watercourses shall be suffered to flow or be discharged.

Public Offices to be closed on the Centennial Anniversary of New South Wales.

IT is hereby notified that the public offices in this colony, excepting the Postal and Telegraph and Customs, will be closed on Thursday, the 26th January, 1888, in celebration of the Centenary Anniversary of the Colony of New South Wales.
