ROCK REPORTED, POVERTY BAY ANCHORAGE.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st September, 1887.

CAPTAIN Sinclair, of the s.s. “Tarawera,” reports having touched on a rock in Poverty Bay, when at anchor in the usual place, in 7½ fathoms, with the Red Buoy bearing S. 40° E., and Luna Buoy nearly on with a small white house on the northern shore of the bay. The ship at the time was riding with 35 fathoms chain; the wind was light, and the swell heavy from the southward. On examining the ground a rock with only 4½ fathoms and with 6 fathoms all round within a boat’s length was found.
JULIUS VOGEL.

Notice to Mariners, No. 35 of 1887.

HARBOUR LIGHT, TIMARU.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st September, 1887.

THE following amended Notice to Mariners respecting the Timaru light, received from the Timaru Harbour Board, is published for general information.
JULIUS VOGEL.

The Timaru lighthouse is 30ft. high, built of wood, and painted white. The light is a fixed white light of the fifth order dioptric, and shows a green sector of 45° (four points) from W. to S.W. magnetic as viewed from seaward. It stands 85ft. above the sea-level, and, allowing 15ft. for the height of the observer’s eye, should be visible in clear weather at a distance of fourteen nautical miles.

The green sector is intended as a guide to vessels approaching Timaru during the night or bringing up in the roadstead. Masters of vessels are particularly cautioned that on nearing the port, and while lying at anchor, they must not lose sight of the GREEN LIGHT; and that, if compelled to make the harbour, they must, when within half a mile of the breakwater (owing to the extension of the work), come out of the GREEN into the WHITE LIGHT, and get the light to bear S.W. by S. ¼ S., and come in on that bearing until inside the breakwater; and that while underway the lead-line must be kept going. Masters are likewise cautioned not to bring the light to bear S. by W. on account of the “Lyttelton” wreck.

W. J. TENNENT,
Harbour Board Office,
Secretary.
Timaru, 13th September, 1887.

Notice to Mariners, No. 36 of 1887.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 21st September, 1887.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Colonial Secretary, Suva, Fiji, and the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, are published for general information.
JULIUS VOGEL.

FIJI ISLANDS.—INTENDED LIGHT AT SOLO ROCK, NORTH ASTROLABE REEF, KADAVU ISLAND.

NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the 1st February, 1888, there will be exhibited, between sunset and sunrise, from a lighthouse on the above-named rock, a dioptric light of the third order.

The light will be white and single-flashing at intervals of 30 seconds, and visible fifteen miles all round, excepting between the bearings of S. by E. ¼ E. and S. ¼ W., where islands within the Great Astrolabe Reef will intervene.

It will be elevated 96ft. above high-water.
