NOTICE is hereby given that Messrs. HARPER AND
COMPANY, of Christchurch, in the Colony of New Zea-
land, Solicitors, have applied, on behalf of Messrs. MILES AND
COMPANY, of Christchurch aforesaid, Agents for Messrs.
T. C. WILLIAMS AND COMPANY, of Richmond, Virginia, United
States of America, Tobacco Manufacturers, to register, under
"The Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade mark of which the
following is a description, viz.:—
Description of Trade Mark.
The special and distinctive word "Ruby."
Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.

High Street, Dunedin, in the Colony of New Zealand,
Solicitor, has applied, on behalf of the DRAPERY AND GENERAL
IMPORTING COMPANY OF NEW ZEALAND, LIMITED, to register,
under "The Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade mark of
which the following is a description, viz.:—
Description of Trade Mark.
The letters "D.I.C.," applicable as initial letters to the
company's business as Drapery Importing Company or as
Drapery and General Importing Company.
Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.
Drapery, crockery, ironmongery, stationery, articles of art,
and fancy goods. To be used on parcels, boxes, and other
packages containing the said articles, and in any other way
required by the applicant.

THE following special orders (3), made by the Whaka-
tane Road Board, are published in accordance with
"The Road Boards Act, 1882."

- At a special meeting of the Whakatane District Board,
held on the 13th day of April, the following special order was
duly made in accordance with section 76 of "The Road
Boards Act, 1882:"—
That the Whakatane District Board do now make a special
order for the adoption of "The Local Bodies' Loans Act,
1886," and "The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act,
1886," generally.
I hereby certify that the above special order has been duly
made by the Whakatane District Board as required by the
76th section of "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

- At a special meeting of the Whakatane District Board,
held on the 9th June, 1887,—
A special rate of three farthings in the pound was struck
on all rateable property in the Whakatane Subdistrict
(Crown and Native lands exempt) as a guarantee of interest
for the loan of £2,000, under "The Local Bodies' Loans
Act, 1866."
I hereby certify that the above special order has been duly
made by the Whakatane District Board.

- At a special meeting of the Whakatane District Board,
held on the 4th May, 1887,—
It was resolved that the boundaries of the Subdistrict of
the Whakatane Road District for the purpose under "The
Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1866," should be as follows, that is
to say, bounded on the West by the Whakatane River from
the sea to the confiscation boundary-line; on the South by
said confiscation boundary-line to the easternmost corner of
Section No. 279; from thence bounded on the East by
Section No. 310, Crown lands, and University Reserve, to the
starting-point, the sea.
I hereby certify that the above special order has been duly
made by the Whakatane District Board.

Special Order made by Manganui Road Board, County of
Taranaki.

THE following special order, made by the Manganui Road
Board, is published in accordance with "The Road
Boards Act, 1882."

SPECIAL ORDER.
THAT a special rate of 1½d. in the pound be now struck over
the rateable property in the Denbigh Road Special Rating
District, being Sections Nos. 1 to 22, both inclusive, Manga-
nui District, the same to be an annual-recurring rate ex-
tending over a period of twenty-six years, and to be payable
in one instalment on the 1st October in each year.
I hereby certify that the above is a true copy of a special
order made by the Manganui Road Board, at Midhurst, on
Saturday, the 6th August, 1887, and that the requirements
of the law have been complied with.

Awards of Royal Humane Society of Australasia granted
in New Zealand.

THE following list of awards of the Royal Humane
Society of Australasia, granted in New Zealand during
the year 1886-87, is published for general information.

LIST OF AWARDS GRANTED TO RESIDENTS IN NEW ZEA-
LAND, 1886-87, WITH PRÉCIS OF CASES.
WILLIAM ALLAN FISHER (aged thirty-three years), surgeon,
saved the lives of Alice Maloney, aged nine years, and George
Taylor, aged forty-three years, at Wairoa River, North Clyde,
Hawke's Bay, on the 24th April, 1885. A ferry-boat upset in
the middle of the river and all the occupants thrown into
the water. Alice Maloney and George Taylor being unable
to swim, and were kept afloat by Dr. Fisher and Thomas
Carroll, until rescued by Mr. Large in a canoe. Awarded a
certificate of merit.
THOMAS CARROLL (aged thirty-five years), sheep-farmer,
assisted to save the lives of Alice Maloney and George Taylor,
on the 24th April, 1885, at the Wairoa River, by jumping in
and helping to support the above named, as described in the
preceding case. Awarded a certificate of merit.
DAVID GILMOUR STEPHENS (aged forty-three years), in-
spector of works, Dunedin, restored to consciousness Agnes
Ferguson, aged ten years, at Dowling Bay, on the 6th Sep-
tember, 1885. Agnes Ferguson with others had been upset
from a boat, and brought on shore apparently drowned. Mr.
Stephens, by his exertions and encouragement, persistently
maintained for upwards of two hours his efforts to restore
animation, and was rewarded at last by life returning and
ultimately consciousness being restored. The child was
taken to her home. Awarded a certificate of commendation.
BELLA DANIEL (aged fourteen years), a Maori girl, em-
ployed in household duties, endeavoured to rescue Tepeni
Turi, a Maori, from drowning in Cook Strait, on the 21st
December, 1885. A boat with two Maoris and the girl
Daniel was returning to D'Urville Island from the main-
land, when she was capsized; and the water was up to the
gunwale, and in a sinking state. One of the Maoris shortly
after died from exhaustion, the other tried to drown himself
by leaping into the sea. Bella Daniel brought him back:
he died shortly after. She then lashed his body to the boat,
and was herself rescued, with the two dead bodies, on the
following morning. Awarded a bronze medal.
CHARLES EDWARD MATTHEWS (aged fourteen years), a
school-boy, saved the life of his brother, aged six years, at
Pelorus Sound, Marlborough, on the 8th January, 1886.
A boat, with six boys, who had been fishing, capsized:
Matthews supported his brother on his shoulders on the
bottom of the boat for upwards of two hours, the boat rolling
and throwing them off; and, though completely exhausted
with cold and fatigue, he pluckily held his brother till help
arrived. Two boys were drowned. Awarded a certificate of
merit.
WILLIAM PEAKE (aged twenty-nine years), a carpenter,
saved the life of Albert Nicholas, at the Queen's Wharf,
