THE following information, received from Her Majesty's Vice-Consul at Tonga, is hereby promulgated :—
Results of recent surveying operations performed by the United States ship "Mohican," viz. :—

Position of Home Shoal : Lat. 19° 1' 48" S., long. 174° 44' 25" W.

Position of Metis Rock, supposed to be identical with the shoal marked "Wesley," on Chart No. 2421 : Lat. 19° 13' 20' S., long. 174° 48' 50" W. This rock is 300 yards long and 151ft. high.

Position of the new volcanic island, now named Falcon Island : Lat. 20° 19' S., long. 175° 21½' W. The island is one and a quarter miles long and 164ft. high.

The position of an island marked E.D. in lat. 20° 9' S., long. 175° 12' W., was passed over. The island does not exist.

The old position of Culebras Reef, and the position of Submarine Volcano, reported 1877, were also passed over. Neither exist.

NEW HEBRIDES.—REPORTED EXISTENCE OF A SHOAL IN SAH-SOON BAY, MALLICOLO ISLAND.

THE following information, received from Lieutenant and Commander Cross, H.M.S. "Undine," is hereby promulgated :—
A shoal, not shown on the charts, exists in Sah-soon or Sah-sun Bay, Mallicolo Island. It lies N.W. by W. about two and a quarter miles to two and a half miles from Pan-nomoo Point, Sah-soon Bay, and carries from 1 fathom to 4 fathoms at low water. It is about 500 yards long in a N.W. and S.E. direction, and about 200 yards broad. It does not break. There is deep water between it and the coast. Bearings magnetic.
Charts affected : No. 1380, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, and Loyalty Islands ; No. 856, Anchorages in the New Hebrides Islands ; also Pacific Islands, Vol. i. (Western Groups), 1885, page 26.

GREAT BARRIER REEF, CAPE BOWLING GREEN.

THE following information, received from Lieutenant and Commander Richards, H.M. surveying vessel "Paluma," is hereby promulgated :—

A coral reef, which partly dries at half ebb, lies with its S.E. end twenty-one and a half miles to the N.W. of Holborne Island ; the reef extends N.W. by W. and S.E. by E. eight and a quarter miles, and has a greatest breadth of three miles. The average depth of water round the reef, close to, is 25 fathoms. Position of S.E. end, lat. 19° 24' S., long. 148° 9' E.

A circular patch about one and a half miles in diameter lies N.N.E. thirty miles from Cape Cleveland Lighthouse. Position of centre, lat. 18° 45' S., long. 147° 17' E.

A patch one and three-quarter miles long and one mile wide lies with its centre N. ¼ E. thirty miles from Cape Cleveland Lighthouse. Position of centre, lat. 18° 41' S., long. 147° 8' E.

To the N.N.W. of the last-mentioned patch a reef extends E. by N. and W. by S. three and a half miles, its breadth being one mile. On the north-west and west sides it is ragged with outlying patches. The eastern end lies north thirty-three and a half miles from Cape Cleveland Lighthouse. Position of the eastern end, lat. 18° 38' S., long. 147° 5½' E.

The shoal marked doubtful in lat. 18° 41½' S., long. 146° 52½' E., does not exist.

Cape Bowling Green : Examination of the shoal-ground to the eastward of Cape Bowling Green shows a least depth of 9ft. at low-water ordinary springs, with the lighthouse bearing S. 56° W. distant one mile. As the banks in the vicinity of the cape are liable to shift, the directions as to a vessel not shoaling her water under 11 fathoms should be strictly attended to.
