Description of Trade Marks.

No. 1 consists of an oblong label divided into three compartments. In the centre of the central compartment is the picture of a house having a factory in the background. Above the picture are the words “J. Adams’s Patent Composition,” and below the picture are the words “Victoria Park. For cleaning and polishing furniture, &c. Sheffield,” and at the bottom of the compartment is the signature “John Adams.” The compartment on the left contains the following words: “This invaluable composition produces a most brilliant polish with half the usual labour upon all kinds of Cabinet and French polished furniture, pianofortes, papier-maché, japanned and varnished goods, oilcloth, table covers, &c. Retailed in bottles at 8ᵈ, 1ˢ 2ᵈ, and 2ˢ each by grocers, oilmen, furnishing ironmongers, chemists, and upholsterers, of whom can be had Adams’s improved chemical paste for cleaning brass, copper, white metal, &c.” At the top of the compartment are representations of medals. The compartment on the right contains the following words: “Directions for use. After shaking the bottle apply the smallest quantity on woollen cloth, and after rubbing it wholly over the surface polish off with a soft linen or cotton, and by light pressure you will instantly produce a most perfect polish. N.B. Be careful to keep the bottle well corked.” At the top of the compartment are representations of medals. The three compartments are enclosed within an oblong border. The right is claimed to use the said trade mark in all colours.

No. 2 consists of an oblong label having a plaid groundwork, and bearing a little to the right of its centre a circular plaque, in the centre of which is a representation of the Royal coat-of-arms, between the words “Adams’s Patent Composition for cleaning & polishing” above, and the words “Cabinet & French polished furniture, papier-maché, japanned goods, &c. Sheffield,” below. The whole is enclosed within an ornamental oblong border. The right is claimed to use the said trade mark in all colours.

Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade Marks shall apply.

Application for Registration of a Trade Mark.

NOTICE is hereby given that EDWARD WATERS, Patent Agent, of Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, has applied, on behalf of ELLIMAN, SONS, AND CO., of Slough, in the County of Buckingham, England, Embrocation Manufacturers, to register, under “The Trade Marks Act, 1866,” the trade mark of which the following is a description, viz. :

Description of Trade Mark.

Two pictures: One showing a lame horse with a man in a kneeling position applying the embrocation to one of its forelegs, while a gentleman stands looking on; in the background are a stable, tree, gate, and pail, and in the foreground is a dog, and underneath are the words “The Lame Hunter.” The other picture consists of the representation of a gentleman in hunting costume, seated on a horse, and directing the attention of a gentleman on foot to the horse’s forelegs. Three hounds are standing about the horse, and in the background appear trees, a house, and a gate. Below are the words “Hunter cured.”

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade Mark shall apply.

BY-LAW.

THE owner of any horse, horses, or any cattle which may be found straying or wandering on any district road or thoroughfare within the district shall be deemed guilty of an offence against this by-law, and shall upon conviction forfeit and pay a sum of 2s. per head.

I hereby certify that the foregoing is a correct copy of a by-law of the Karori-Makara Road Board, and has been duly made and finally adopted at a meeting of the Board held on Saturday, the 4th September, 1886.

Board of Examination (Wellington) dissolved.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to dissolve the Board of Examination for Militia and Volunteer Officers in the Wellington District, as notified in New Zealand Gazette No. 31 of the 14th May, and No. 35 of the 4th June, 1885, its functions having been assumed by the Council of Military Education.

Approving and appointing a Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the powers in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby approve and appoint the under-mentioned warehouse to be a warehouse for the reception of goods under bond, namely:—

Port of Wellington.

The ground-floor of a brick building with slate roof, situate on Section No. 49, Grey Street, City of Wellington, to be known as

LEVIN’S NO. 2 BONDED WAREHOUSE.

Certain Articles exempted from Duty.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the power in me for this purpose vested by “The Customs Duties Consolidation Act, 1882,” I, Julius Vogel, Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby order that the goods hereunder specified, being materials which are suited only for, and are to be used and applied solely in, the fabrication of goods within the colony, shall be exempt from duty on importation thereof into the colony, namely:—

Saddle-cloth felt.
Plain felt for lining horse-covers.
Raw silk (organzine).

AUSTRALIA.—SOUTH COAST.—BASS STRAITS.

(General Memorandum No. 72.)

H.M.S. “Nelson,” at Sydney,
26th April, 1886.

THE following information, received from Commander Hoskyn, of H.M.S. “Myrmidon,” is hereby promulgated:—

  1. A rock on which there is 4 fathoms at low-water springs lies one and a half miles N.E. ¾ N. from the Crocodile Rock. There is deep water between it and the Crocodile Rock. Position, lat. 39° 20′ 30″ S., long. 146° 31′ 45″ E.

  2. A rock on which there is 9ft. at low-water springs lies one and three-quarter miles W. by S. ¼ S. from the north point of Hammock Island, off the west coast of Flinders Island. Position, lat. 40° 1′ 37″ S., long. 147° 44′ 40″ E.

  3. A rock on which there is 5 fathoms at low-water springs lies two and three-quarter miles N.W. by W. ¾ W. from the south part of Hammock Island, with irregular soundings extending one and a quarter miles to the northward and north-westward, and a 7 fathoms head N. ¼ W. three-quarters of a mile from it.

This notice affects the following Admiralty charts: No. 1694, Loutitt and Appollo Bays, &c.; No. 1695A, Bass Straits,
