point

WILLIAM WILLS, Esq.,

to be the Returning Officer to conduct the first elections of
the Commissioners of the Town District of Arowhenua, as
constituted under "The Town Districts Act, 1881;" and
also to appoint Saturday, the 21st day of August, 1886, to
be the time, and the store of Mr. Edward Lee, at the corner
of High and Wilkin Streets, Arowhenua, to be the place, for
holding such first elections; and also to appoint Tuesday,
the 24th day of August, 1886, at half-past 7 o'clock in the
evening, to be the time, and the said store of Mr. Edward
Lee to be the place, at which the first meeting of the Com-
missioners shall be held.

Society of Australasia granted in New Zealand is pub-
lished for general information.

THE ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY OF AUSTRALASIA.β€”LIST OF
AWARDS GRANTED TO RESIDENTS IN THE COLONY OF NEW
ZEALAND, 1885 AND 1886.

JOHN JACKSON, aged nineteen years, saved the life of John
Caldewood, aged thirty-five years, on the 18th July, 1885, at
George Street Pier, Port Chalmers, by jumping into the
water, 18ft. deep, swimming out to Caldewood, who was
struggling in the water unable to swim, supported him in the
water until assistance arrived. Weather and water icy cold.
Awarded a bronze medal.

ALFRED GEORGE MABIN, aged nineteen years, saved the
life of William Ford, on the 17th April, 1885, at the Queen
Street Wharf, Auckland, by jumping into the water, 18ft. to
20ft. deep, finding Ford, and placing a rope around him, by
which he was hauled alongside a schooner and rescued.
Awarded a bronze medal.

GEORGE BERTRAM BOWSER, aged eight years, saved the
life of Charles Shaw, aged three years, at the Waipoua River,
Masterton, on the 8th July, 1885. Shaw fell into the river,
which was in flood, and was rapidly being carried down by
the current. Bowser, who can swim well, went into the
river a little ahead of the child and brought it ashore. Other
bigger boys saw the accident and were afraid to attempt the
rescue. Awarded a bronze medal.

WILLIAM HENRY RYAN, aged thirty-three years, a police
constable, saved the life of William S. Pardy, at the ford
crossing the River Waitotoroa, between Parihaka and Punga-
rehu, on the 19th June, 1885. The river was in a state of
flood. Pardy was clinging to a rock in the river, having been
thrown from his horse. Ryan plunged in to his assistance
and was carried away by the force of the current, and was
only saved himself by catching hold of a bough of a tree to
which he clung, and by the assistance of which he rescued
Pardy as he floated past with the flood. Awarded a silver
medal.

JAMES GILBERT CHRISTIE, aged thirty-six years, a police
constable, saved the life of James Connell, at Auckland, on
the 18th October, 1885, by jumping overboard at midnight
from the breakwater, diving and bringing Connell to the sur-
face and back to the breakwater, where he supported him
until both were rescued. Awarded a bronze medal.

WILLIAM BRUCE, aged twenty-seven years, saved the life
of Sarah Hall, aged fourteen years, at the breakwater at the
North Head, Wanganui River, by going into the water and
rescuing Sarah Hall from drowning. Awarded a certificate
of merit.

KENNETH VINCENT HUME, aged seventeen years, saved the
life of Frederick Sibun, aged twenty years, by jumping off
the Customhouse Quay, at Wellington, on the 29th November,
1885, with his clothes on, and after a severe struggle with
Sibun, who, it was said, was attempting to commit suicide,
held him and brought him to the steps and supported him
until he was pulled out of the water. Awarded a bronze
medal.

FRANCIS WILLIAM TRIGGS, aged twenty-five years, rescued
E. F. Campbell, aged twenty-four years, from drowning in
Wellington Harbour, on the 20th December, 1885. A boat
belonging to the Wellington Rowing Club was upset and sank.
All the crew except Campbell, who could not swim, reached
a place of safety. Campbell sank. Triggs saw the situation,
jumped in, dived, and succeeded in rescuing and supporting
him until assistance arrived. Awarded a certificate of
merit.

JAMES RUSSELL FORREST, aged thirteen years, attempted
to rescue Henry Kerr, aged twelve years, from drowning in
the River Waimakariri, near Kaiapoi, on the 17th February,
1886. Some boys were bathing. Forrest observed Kerr in
distress, and swam back and requested him to put his hand
on his back, and he began to swim to the bank. Kerr became
nervous, grasped Forrest round the neck, and both sank.
Kerr was drowned. Awarded a certificate of merit.

ALFRED BEVINS, aged twenty-seven years, now second officer
of the s.s. "Iona," rescued Mrs. Boyd and infant from
