Maritime and Land Notices

JULY 1.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 789

Notice to Mariners, No. 21 of 1886.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 28th June, 1886.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, and the Portmaster, Brisbane, are published for general information.

W. J. M. LARNACH.

ESTABLISHMENT OF FOG-SIGNALS AT LIGHTHOUSE STATIONS.

NOTICE is hereby given to pilots, masters of vessels, and others that on and after the 1st September, 1886, fog-signals will be established and warnings given from the following lighthouse stations, during thick or foggy weather:—

Port Phillip Heads.

Point Lonsdale Station.—A syren apparatus of the fifth order, producing when in operation a high-pitched note of about four seconds’ duration, every two minutes, which sound should be heard, under favourable atmospheric conditions, from three to four miles distant.

Bass Straits.

Cape Otway Station.—One rocket, at intervals of five minutes.

Cliffy Island Station.—One rocket, at intervals of five minutes.

Gabo Island.

Gabo Island Station.—Three rockets in quick succession, every fifteen minutes.

Warning.

The rockets explode at a height of about 600 feet above the sea-level, producing at the same time a sharp report, which should be heard, under favourable atmospheric conditions, at a distance of from five to six miles; but circumstances may arise to prevent even the most powerful sound-signal from being heard two miles distant; therefore, when a signal is heard, it should be assumed that the source of the sound is not more than from one to one and a half miles distant, and the necessary precautions taken accordingly.

ALEX. WILSON,
Engineer in Charge, Ports and Harbours.

Department of Ports and Harbours,
Melbourne, 8th June, 1886.

DANGER OFF ENTRANCE TO GREAT NORTH-EAST CHANNEL, TORRES STRAITS.

NOTICE is hereby given that a reef is reported as having been found lying forty miles E.N.E. from Anchor Cay.

It is described as consisting of three small patches, awash at low water, forming a triangle, and not exceeding a quarter of a mile in extent.

Mr. Goldie states that this danger was seen at night some eight years before, but had been since searched for by the Mission schooner without success. On this occasion the reef was distinctly made out, the sea breaking heavily over it.

G. P. HEATH, Commander, R.N.,
Portmaster.
