The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs:—
The births in April were 255 against 293 in March, a decrease of 38. The deaths in April were 110 against 178 in March, a decrease of 68.
There were 10 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards. Three males of 86, 80, and 75, and 1 female of 68, died at Auckland; 3 females of 79, 70, and 66 at Wellington; 1 female of 70 at Christchurch; 1 male of 75, and 1 female of 71, at Dunedin.
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The number of deaths from these diseases amounted to 21 in April against 63 in March. The deaths in this class are always much less numerous in the winter than in the summer months. Low and typhoid fevers caused 3 deaths in April against 9 in March; 2 of these deaths occurred in Wellington, the other in Auckland. Diphtheria caused 2 deaths, both in Dunedin. The mortality from diarrhoeal diseases decreased from 46 in March to 15 in April. Of the latter, the greatest number (9) occurred in Auckland.
Constitutional Diseases.—These diseases caused 23 deaths in April against 28 in March. The deaths from phthisis were 13 in April and 15 in March. Cancer caused 3 deaths in April and 2 in the previous month.
Local Diseases.—These diseases were also less fatal in April, the deaths having been 43 in number against 52 in March. The decrease occurred in the deaths from diseases of the digestive system, from 17 to 12, and from diseases of the urinary system, from 4 to nil. Diseases of the respiratory system caused an increase of 2 deaths, from 7 to 9. Diseases of the circulatory system caused 9 and 8 deaths in March and April respectively.
Violent Deaths.—There were 4 deaths in this class against 8 in March. Of the four, 1 was suicidal, 1 from accidental poisoning, and 1 from an overdose of chloroform, There was 1 death in Wellington from drowning; 3 deaths from drowning were registered in Wellington during the previous month of March.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
