(2.) Breaking up and laying down the same in English or
other cultivated grass; or
(3.) Breaking up and planting or sowing root or other crops
therein; and, in case of bush lands, the felling and
clearing of timber and sowing of grass.

In the event of the death of a settler, his interest in
the allotment will revert to his legal representatives, who
may dispose of it to a bona fide settler approved by the Com-
missioner; and the purchaser shall be deemed to stand in
the position of the original settler. -
Should any settler be compelled to leave the district
previous to his completing the requisite term of occupation,
it shall be competent for the Commissioner to permit such
settler to transfer his rights, title, and interest in the land
selected to another bona fide settler, who shall be deemed to
occupy the position of the original occupant: Provided
always that no settler shall be allowed to hold more than
200 acres under these regulations. -
No person shall be entitled to hold land under these
regulations unless he shall have served at least five years in
the Police and Armed Constabulary Force, and shall have
retired for the purpose of settling on the said land, or shall
have been discharged on reduction since the 1st day of
January, 1882; and in every case each settler must have
received a good character on discharge. -
In case any doubt shall arise as to the construction of
these terms and conditions, with reference to the selection
and occupation or clearing of any land, or otherwise arising
thereunder, the same shall be settled by the Commissioner.

At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this twenty-
ninth day of December, 1885.

THE HONOURABLE THE COLONIAL TREASURER PRESIDING IN
COUNCIL.
IN pursuance and in exercise of the powers vested in him
by "The Public Works Act, 1882," and of all other
powers in anywise enabling him in that behalf, His Excel-
lency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor
of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and
consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth
hereby order that the Government work known as a road, in
Waikohu Survey District, Cook County, Provincial District
of Auckland, shall and may be constructed on or through
the parcels of land mentioned in the Schedule hereto, and
delineated in the plan marked P.W.D. 13520, deposited in
the office of the Minister for Public Works at Wellington,
in the Provincial District of Wellington, in the said colony,
and thereon coloured red.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this third day of
November, 1885.

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL.
IN pursuance and in exercise of the powers vested in him
by "The Public Works Act, 1882," and of all other
powers in anywise enabling him in this behalf, His Excel-
lency Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor
of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and
consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth
hereby order that the Government work known as an ex-
tension of the Foxton-New Plymouth Railway, from New
Plymouth to the breakwater at Moturoa, shall and may be
constructed on or through the parcel of land more particu-
larly described in the Schedule hereto, and delineated in the
plan marked P.W.D. 13279, deposited in the office of the
Minister for Public Works, at Wellington, in the Provincial
District of Wellington, in the said colony.

Governors of New Zealand Institute appointed.

WHEREAS by "The New Zealand Institute Act, 1867,"
provision is made for the appointment of members
of a Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, and
it is enacted that, on the first day of November, one thousand
eight hundred and sixty-eight, and on the first day of No-
vember in each succeeding year, three members of the said
Board of Governors shall retire from office, but shall be
eligible for reappointment: And whereas the Honourable
George Marsden Waterhouse, the Honourable Walter Bal-
dock Durant Mantell, and William Thomas Locke Travers,
Esquire, three of the members of the said Board of Governors,
have retired from office, and are eligible for reappointment
under the provisions of the said Act: And whereas by the
said Act it is also provided that, on the annual retirement of
the said three members, the successors of such retiring
members shall be appointed by the Governor:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois,
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance
and exercise of the power and authority in that behalf vested
in me by the said Act, do hereby appoint
The Honourable George Marsden Waterhouse, M.L.C.,
The Honourable Walter Baldock Durant Mantell,
M.L.C., F.G.S., and
William Thomas Locke Travers, Esquire, F.L.S.,
to be Governors of the institution called the New Zealand
Institute.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor,
this first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six.
