against 15·26 for 1883. The causes of death which proved more fatal in the earlier year are considered below.
CAUSES OF DEATH.
Zymotic Diseases.—This class of disease caused 20·74 per cent. of the total deaths in 1884, and 26·76 per cent. in the
previous year; the following complaints having been most prevalent in 1883:—

Of 45 deaths from whooping cough during 1884, 25 were at Auckland and 11 at Wellington. Of 74 fatal cases of
dysentery and diarrhoea, 46 were at Auckland and 11 at Wellington. Typhoid fever was also more fatal at these towns
than at Christchurch and Dunedin.
Constitutional Diseases.—19·30 per cent. of the total deaths were from constitutional diseases. The number of deaths
was 255, against 252 in 1883. There were 50 deaths from cancer in 1884, and 137 from phthisis, but these numbers are not
widely different from those for the previous year.
Local Diseases.—The mortality was 41·79 per cent. of the whole, against 38·58 for 1883. Diseases of the respiratory
organs show an increase from 143 deaths to 183, mostly accounted for under the heading pneumonia.
Developmental Diseases.—These deaths were 13·93 per cent. of the total, a slightly higher rate than prevailed in 1883.
Debility of children caused 83 deaths, of which 35 were at Wellington. The mortality registered as from “old age” is
shown in a separate table (ante), according to yearly periods.
Violent Deaths.—Of 55 deaths, or 4·16 per cent., 43 were accidental, 9 of these last being of children under 5 years of
age; the chief cause was fracture or contusion, from which 18 deaths resulted. Of accidental drowning there were 6 cases.
One death was homicidal, a murder by stabbing, and eleven were suicidal.
