Birth-rates.—The birth-rates for the year 1884 were higher than for 1883 at Auckland and Wellington, but lower at Christchurch and Dunedin. The diversity noticed in the rates for the year 1883 existed in a still greater degree in 1884, at Auckland the rate being 43·25 per 1,000 of mean population, and at Dunedin only 29·25 per 1,000 persons. These deviations are probably the result of varied proportions in different towns of married persons to the rest of the population, and of the married at different age-periods. It is possible, besides, that the estimated populations stated may be either a little too high or a little too low, as no account is taken of the arrivals or departures, which are affected by the prosperity or otherwise of the towns. In the early part of next year another census of the colony will be taken, and an exact statement of town populations can then be rendered. Meanwhile efforts will be made to test the correctness of the estimates above given by means of information obtained from the municipal authorities.
Death-rates.—The death-rate of Wellington—15·54 per 1,000 persons—was the highest at the four towns; Auckland follows with a rate of 15·27 per 1,000; Christchurch is third (13·08); and Dunedin lowest (12·95). The rate at Melbourne for 1883 was 15·17 for the city only, and 19·46 including the surrounding boroughs. At the City of Sydney the rate for the same year was 19·30, and for the suburbs, 20·08. The death-rate in the urban population of England for the year 1882 was 21·1 per 1,000 persons.
But any inferences that may be drawn from comparing the above-quoted figures are subject to qualification, as the proportions of persons living at different age-periods may vary considerably for the several towns.
Infant Mortality.—The number of deaths of children under 1 year of age to every 100 births is given below for each town, showing Wellington to have had in this respect the highest rate of mortality:—
