NOTES FOR JULY.
Auckland.—Showery weather, heavy rain early part, 1·25in. recorded on 6th, and 1·65in. on 7th, the maximum for month; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 6th, 7th, 19th, and 28th from that quarter; fog on 29th and 30th.
Wellington.—Very showery weather almost throughout, and cold, with frequent fogs; some bright, pleasant mornings, but wet mostly during nights; prevailing S.E. and E. winds, and usually light or calm. The maximum rainfall recorded on 15th ·720in.; hail on 13th, and sleet and hail on 14th. Fog on seven days. Some very cold nights.
Lincoln.—A wet month, maximum rain on 8th ·713in.; prevailing S.W. wind, but moderate, and frequent calms; fog on 25th.
Dunedin.—Generally pleasant weather, with light showers, except on 7th and 8th, when heavy rain fell, the maximum on 8th ·904in.; fogs on 9th, 16th, 17th, and 26th; winds light, frequent calms in mornings; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Weather about the average for time of year. Earthquakes at Wellington, 18th, 9.43 p.m., and on 26th, 7.50 p.m., slight; also at Lincoln on 26th, at same time, slight.
NOTES FOR AUGUST.
Auckland.—A fine month, with little rain, the maximum recorded on 8th ·41in.; prevailing S. and S.W. winds, and strong on 14th and 31st from that quarter, and on 9th from S.E., and 13th from N.E.; thunder on 8th; hail on 1st.
Wellington.—On 1st, fine; 2nd to 7th, showery, squally, cold weather, with hail on 3rd and 4th; wind S.E., and strong on 2nd and 3rd; from 8th to 12th, fine easterly weather, with light winds; 13th to 16th, generally unpleasant, squally weather, with showers, ·46in. rain recorded on 14th, the maximum for month, wind N.W., and strong on 15th and 16th; remainder of month finer, with intervals of showery weather, wind N.W., strong on 22nd and 23rd, and again stormy on 30th; prevailing wind from N.W. and S.E.
Lincoln.—Tolerably fine, though at times showery, maximum rainfall on 2nd 1·036in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong on four days; thunder on 24th and 31st; snow on 3rd; hail on 3rd, 24th, and 31st; fog on 9th and 24th.
Dunedin.—Heavy rain in beginning and end of month from S.W., the maximum recorded on 2nd ·965in., otherwise fine weather, prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and strong on 12th and 25th; snow on 3rd; hail on 2nd, and fog on 4th.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Rain rather under the average, and, on the whole, seasonable weather, though some severe days experienced in the South, with strong winds. Earthquake at Wellington on 5th, at 5.10 p.m., rather sharp.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER.
Auckland.—Showery early part; wind S.W., and strong on 1st, 6th, and 9th; from 10th to end of month, fine, with few showers, except heavy rain on night of 29th, ·75in. the maximum for month; prevailing S.W. wind, and generally moderate.
Wellington.—Fine to 4th; from 4th to 10th showery and generally cold weather, strong wind on 5th, N.W., thunder and lightning on 5th, and lightning only on 4th and 8th, hail on 9th, ·520in. rain on 6th, the maximum for month; from 11th to 25th generally fine, although showers at times, wind chiefly from S.E. and cool; remainder of month very stormy, with rain from N.W.
Lincoln.—Fine weather, very slight rainfall, the maximum on 21st ·223in.; prevailing N.E. wind; very stormy on 8th and 9th from N.W.; thunder on 29th; hail on 17th.
Dunedin.—Showery weather, but small total rainfall, the maximum on 1st ·214in.; wind prevailed from S.W., and strong on 5th, 8th, and 16th.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally fine weather during this month, with small rainfall, and about the average temperature.
