County of Clifton constituted.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS a petition was presented to the Governor,
signed by not less than three-fifths of the county
electors contained within that portion of the County of
Taranaki included within the boundaries particularly set
forth in the First Schedule hereto, and which said portion
comprises in the whole an area of more than two hundred
thousand acres in extent, and contains more than one hun-
dred county electors: And whereas the said petition prayed
the Governor to constitute the said portion of the County of
Taranaki a new county, and to set forth the boundaries of
the proposed new county: And whereas such petition has
been publicly notified as by law required:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the
advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said
colony, by virtue and in exercise of the powers vested in me
by "The Counties Act, 1876," do hereby proclaim and
declare that the aforesaid portion of the County of Taranaki
shall, as from the first day of February, one thousand eight
hundred and eighty-five, constitute a new county, to be
called the County of Clifton; and that the boundaries of
the said new county so constituted shall be those par-
ticularly set forth in the First Schedule hereto; and the
said new county is hereby constituted accordingly.
And I do further proclaim and declare that the said
County of Clifton shall be divided into two ridings, to be
called the Tikorangi Riding and the Mokau Riding, the
boundaries whereof shall be those particularly set forth in
the Second Schedule hereto.
And, in exercise of the like power, and with the like advice
and consent as aforesaid, I do further proclaim and declare
that the number of members of the County Council of the
said County of Clifton shall be: For the Tikorangi Riding,
three members; and for the Mokau Riding, three members.
FIRST SCHEDULE.
COUNTY OF CLIFTON.
BOUNDED towards the North-west and North by the County
of Kawhia; towards the East by the Counties of West
Taupo and Wanganui respectively to a point in line
with the southern boundary-line of Block VI., Huiroa
Survey District; thence towards the South by a right line
in the direction of the said southern boundary-line of Block
VI., as far as the Makino Stream; thence towards the South-
west by a line along the middle of that stream and of the
Waitara River to the ocean; and thence towards the
North-west generally by the ocean: excepting from the above-
described area any part of the Town District of Raleigh.
SECOND SCHEDULE.
TIKORANGI RIDING.
COMPRISes all that area of the County of Clifton known as
the Waitara East Road District, as described in the New
Zealand Gazette No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
MOKAU RIDING.
Comprises all that area of the County of Clifton known as
the Clifton Road District, as described in the New Zealand
Gazette No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William
Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General
in Her Majesty's Army, Knight Grand Cross of the
Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable
Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-
Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral
of the same; and issued under the Seal of the
said Colony, at Christchurch, this sixth day of
January, in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and eighty-five.
