SUMMER PROBLEM.

Candidates for examination for certificates of competency for foreign-going ships as masters, first mates, and only mates will no longer be furnished by the Examiners with the longitudes corresponding to the two latitudes by the second observation. The candidates will consequently be required to work out the whole of the problem for themselves (in place of the explanation now required), and must be prepared to find the sun's true bearing at the time of taking either the first or second observation, and, when necessary, to produce the lines of positions on the chart in order to make them cut one another should the position of the ship happen to be outside the parallels of the two assumed latitudes given in the question.

Half an hour additional time will be allowed for the extra work involved in this problem.

EXTRA MASTERS' CERTIFICATES.

With the view of obtaining uniformity of practice at the different examining ports, it is hereby notified that the time allowed candidates for examination for extra masters' certificates of competency to complete the whole of the problems and writings (including the correction of all errors and oversights) must not exceed twenty-six hours. This period is not intended to include the time occupied by the viva voce part of the examination.

DEVIATION OF THE COMPASS.

A period not exceeding eleven hours will be allowed to candidates for the completion of the whole of the examination in the syllabus, including the correction of all errors and oversights in both the problems and writings.

LOSS OF SIGHT.

A person who has lost the sight of one eye cannot be permitted to be examined for a certificate of competency either for the foreign or home trade. If he already holds a certificate, he cannot be examined for a certificate of a higher grade.

THE Lyttelton Harbour Board direct special attention to the dredging operations now proceeding outside the Lyttelton breakwater, and caution all masters of steamers and sailing-vessels to take the entrance to the southward and westward of the dredge and her moorings, on which side a red flag will be shown in the daytime and two lights (green over white) will be shown at night. Attention is also directed to the General Harbour Regulation No. 34.

"THE Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882," and the Amendment thereof.

To each and every the owner or owners of land described in the substituted valuation rolls of Native lands supplied to the local bodies, the names of which are set forth in the Schedule hereunder, under the provisions of the above Acts and all other Acts affecting the same or relating thereto.

WHEREAS demand having been made to me, the undersigned Colonial Treasurer of the Colony of New Zealand, in accordance with the provisions of "The Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882," by or on behalf of the said local bodies, for payment of the rates appearing to be payable under or by virtue of the said rolls:

Notice is hereby given to you and each and every of you that rolls of Native lands are now deposited at the offices of the said several local bodies, which said rolls are in the Maori language, and show the rateable value of the Native lands therein mentioned or described.

And you and each and every of you, the owners of the said lands, are hereby required and directed to pay the said rates on or before the 18th day of May, 1885, such payment to be made by you at the office of the local body in whose district the lands affected are respectively comprised, and as noted in the said Schedule.
