Lincoln.—Fine early part, but showery during latter part of month; maximum rainfall on 28th, 1·207in.; variable winds and moderate, except strong on 22nd from N.E., 27th S.W., and 28th S.W.; snow and hail on 27th and 28th.
Dunedin.—Changeable weather, showery and unpleasant from 19th to end of month; strong wind on 4th, 5th, and 30th from S.W., from which quarter it prevailed, but otherwise moderate; snow on 29th; maximum rainfall on 28th, ·53in.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Rather unpleasant weather, showery and changeable, though rain below average.
NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1884.
Auckland.—A very wet month, almost constant rain; maximum rainfall recorded on 16th, 1·33in.; strong wind on 11th, 12th, and 16th from N.E., and on 23rd from S.W.; otherwise wind moderate, and prevailed from S.W.; fog on 5th.
Wellington.—First three days fine, then showery up to 14th, but with intervals of fine bright cold weather and variable; fine from 15th to 19th, light easterly wind; 20th to 23rd showery from S.E. and S.W.; fine remainder of month, except heavy showers on 27th; prevailing wind N.W.; stormy on six days from N.W. and one day from S.W.; thunder on 5th; snow on 22nd; hail on 5th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd; fog on 15th and 16th; maximum rainfall on 6th, ·73in.
Lincoln.—Fine weather, though showery about middle of month; maximum rainfall on 12th, ·494in.; prevailing N.E. wind and moderate; strong S.W. gale on 22nd, with thunder, hail, and snow; fog on 17th, 18th, and 19th.
Dunedin.—Showery weather, though no heavy fall of rain, the maximum being ·75in. on 11th; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate, often calm; snow on 6th and 21st; fog on four days.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Showery squally weather generally during this period; temperature rather above the average.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1884.
Auckland.—On the whole a showery month; maximum rainfall on 13th, ·60in.; prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds, and strong on 3rd and 14th from former and on 30th from N.E., otherwise moderate.
Wellington.—First three days stormy from N.W. and rain, causing floods in Wairarapa District, then fine, but often stormy from N.W.; showery on 11th and 12th; strong S.E. wind on 13th, with hail and snow on hills, and rain; maximum rainfall recorded on 13th, 1·30in.; continued showery remainder of month, and strong winds from N.W. from 21st to 24th and S.E. on 27th and 28th; thunder on 27th, and hail also on 18th; prevailing N.W. wind and frequently stormy.
Lincoln.—Early part fine, latter showery; maximum rainfall recorded on 28th, 1·009in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds and generally fresh, strong on 12th, 23rd, and 24th from S.W.; hail on 20th.
Dunedin.—Fine early part, but towards end of month showery and unpleasant; maximum rainfall on 28th, 1·13in.; variable winds and moderate; fog on 26th.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally fair weather for the time of year, average temperature, rain rather in excess. Meteor observed at Wellington on 9th.
NOTES FOR OCTOBER, 1884.
Auckland.—Showery squally weather, with prevailing S.W. wind, and gale on 14th and 18th; maximum rainfall on 9th, ·81in.; hail on 15th.
Wellington.—Up to 6th fine and pleasant weather, wind chiefly N.W.; on morning of 7th, at 6 a.m., severe storm of thunder, hail, and heavy rain, 1½in. falling up to 9.30 a.m., causing floods and damage, after which cleared up and tolerably fine, with slight showers, until 13th, when it changed from N.W. to S.W., and with strong wind, thunder, hail, and rain, 2·7in. falling up to 15th; continued squally up to 20th, with heavy showers; sudden squall from S.W. on 19th, with rain, hail, and thunder, and remained wet until the 20th; from 21st to 28th generally fine from N.W., although at times fresh wind; night of 28th rain, and showery to end of month; maximum rainfall on 14th, 1·65in.
Lincoln.—Middle of month showery; maximum rainfall on 14th, ·611in.; otherwise fine weather; prevailing N.E. wind; stormy on 4th and 10th from N.E., 11th, 15th, and 19th from S.W., and on 30th from N.W.; hail on 14th.
Dunedin.—Fine pleasant weather, except from 7th to 20th, when it was cold, showery, and unpleasant; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate, except strong on 9th; thunder on 30th; maximum rainfall on 21st, ·47in.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Rainfall generally in excess of average, and on the whole showery, squally, unpleasant month.
NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1884.
Auckland.—First five days fine, then showery from 6th to 15th; from 16th to 22nd fine, from 23rd to 27th showery, fine remainder of month; about the average rainfall; maximum fall on 6th, ·53in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 6th and 24th, and generally moderate.
Wellington.—Fine from N.W. up to night of 4th, when it blew a gale from that quarter with rain; wind changed to S. on 5th, and showery unpleasant weather up to 12th from that quarter; 2·33in. rain recorded on 7th, maximum for month; strong wind during this period; from 12th to 21st finer weather, though unsettled and changeable; strong wind on 17th from N.W.; generally showery and squally remainder of month, though finer last few days; stormy from N.W. on 23rd, 25th, and 26th; prevailing wind for month from N.W.
Lincoln.—Very wet from 4th to 14th, wind S.W. and strong on 4th, 5th, and 11th; remainder of month fine, though at times dull; prevailing S.W. and N.E. winds, and frequently strong; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 1·158in.
Dunedin.—Early part and latter showery, but from 15th to 23rd fine; maximum rainfall on 26th, ·760in.; prevailing S.W. wind and moderate.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Rainfall about average, temperature under the average, weather on the whole unsettled.
NOTES FOR DECEMBER, 1884.
Auckland.—Very wet month, except from 10th to 15th, when it was fine; maximum rainfall recorded on 25th, 1·05in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and frequently strong; thunder on 25th, 26th, and 27th.
Wellington.—Showery weather up to 12th, heavy rain recorded on 5th, 6th, and 11th; tolerably fine then until 23rd, remainder of month showery; heavy rainfall recorded on the 29th; 3·48in., the maximum for month, falling during the night of 28th; prevailing N.W. wind and frequently stormy; thunder on night of 10th.
Lincoln.—On the whole showery squally weather, with prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and often strong; maximum rainfall on 4th, ·665; intervals of fine weather.
Dunedin.—Dull unpleasant weather, with almost constant rain; maximum rainfall, 1·02in. on the 21st; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds, and generally light.
GENERAL REMARKS.—A very wet month, rainfall at all stations in excess of average; temperature below average; squally weather.
