The letters “V.O.” in one line burnt into the wood. The letter V is about 7 inches long and 7¼ inches wide at the foot, ruled with eighteen diagonal lines; and the letter O is about 7¾ inches long and 6 inches wide in the middle, ruled with sixteen diagonal lines.

CERTIFICATE.
I, THOMAS HITCHINGS, the Medical Officer in attendance at the execution of Rowland Herbert Edwards, at the prison of Napier, do hereby certify and declare that I have this day witnessed the execution of the said Rowland Herbert Edwards, at the said prison; and I do further certify and declare that the said Rowland Herbert Edwards was, in pursuance of the sentence of the Supreme Court, hanged by the neck until his body was dead.
Given under my hand this fifteenth day of July, in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, at the prison of Napier.

DECLARATION.
We do hereby testify and declare that we have this day been present when the extreme penalty of the law was carried into execution on the body of Rowland Herbert Edwards, convicted at the criminal session of the Supreme Court, held at Napier on the tenth day of June last, and sentenced to death; and that the said Rowland Herbert Edwards was, in pursuance of the said sentence, hanged by the neck until his body was dead.
Dated this fifteenth day of July, in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, at the prison of Napier.

INVESTIGATOR STRAIT.—KANGAROO ISLAND, NEPEAN BAY.
NOTICE is hereby given that a tub-shaped buoy, surmounted by open pyramidal framework and ball, painted red, has been moored off the end of the sandspit leading into Kingscote Harbour in 3½ fathoms at low water. The buoy is in lat. 35° 40′ 40″ S., and long. 137° 41′ E., approximately. Vessels anchoring to the southward of this buoy will be clear of the telegraph cable.

INVESTIGATOR STRAIT.—KANGAROO ISLAND, NEPEAN BAY.
NOTICE is hereby given that the cheese-shaped buoy moored in lat. 35° 41′ 30″ S., and long. 137° 42′ 35″ E., for the purpose of indicating the line of telegraph cable from Yankalilla to Kingscote, has been replaced by a bell-buoy constructed of iron, painted red, surmounted by pyramidal framework and ball, and marked with the letter T on each side of the frame.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—SANDBANK.
NOTICE is hereby given that the master of the British ship “Cambrian Princess,” on a voyage from Cooktown to Port Adelaide, has reported the existence, in lat. 15° 44′ S., and long. 149° 52′ E., of a sandbank, about three miles in length and apparently 6 feet out of water; no outlying reefs or discoloured water was visible from the masthead.

SOUTH-WEST COAST.—WATERLOO BAY.
Lat. 33° 39′ 20″ S., long. 134° 52′ 30″ E.
NOTICE is hereby given that moorings for four vessels are now laid down in Waterloo Bay; the outer ones (two moorings) are in 27 feet at low water, and the inner ones (two moorings) in 11 feet at low water.
The soundings are very uneven after passing the reefs at the entrance, and shoal patches of 12 and 13 feet exist at low water, with rocky bottom all over the bay.

DYNAMITE HULK, PORT PHILLIP BAY.
MASTERS of vessels and others are hereby informed that the dynamite hulk “Sydney Griffiths” has been moored in 20 feet of water to the northward of Point Cook, with the buoy thereof bearing S. by E. ½ E., distance about 7 cables.
An anchor-light will be exhibited from sunset to sunrise.

LIGHT ON NASALAI REEF, VITI LEVU.
NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the 1st October, 1884, there will be exhibited from sunset to sunrise a fixed white light, on the south-east extreme of the reef, off the Village of Nasalai, Viti Levu, visible to vessels approaching the island from the southward or eastward.
The light will be shown from a wooden structure painted white, and at an elevation of 45 feet above high water, and should be visible in clear weather at a distance of twelve miles, allowing 15 feet as height of eye.
The light will be obscured through north, between the bearings of N.E. by N. and S.W. ¼ W. (magnetic).
Position: Lat. 18° 8′ 10″ S., long. 178° 42′ 20″ E.
Variation: 9°45 E., 1884.
Further information will be given as the work progresses.

OPUA WHARF LIGHT, BAY OF ISLANDS.

NOTICE is hereby given that a red light will be placed on the northern or outer end of the Railway Coal Wharf at Opuo (Waimangaroa) Point, at the junction of the Kawakawa and Waikari Rivers, and will be shown from sunset to sunrise on and after the 11th August, 1884, and be seen between the bearings of S.W. ¾ W. and S.E. by E. ¼ E.
