THE NEW ZEALAND TOBACCO COMPANY’S BONDED TOBACCO MANUFACTORY.

Commissioner’s Order No. 203.]
Report of Court of Inquiry into Collision between the “Rowena” and “Kauri” confirmed.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 30th June, 1884.
HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to confirm the following report of the Court of Inquiry into the collision between the s.s. “Rowena” and the scow “Kauri,” by which the New Zealand Certificate of Service No. 2524, held by William Norris, the master of the “Rowena,” is suspended for two months from the 21st ultimo. The collision occurred between Port Charles and Waikawau on the 22nd April last.
H. A. ATKINSON.
THAT the collision was caused by the default of the master of the “Rowena” in leaving the deck and not seeing that a competent man was in charge. When he went below he should, in my opinion, have accepted the offer of Prohl (the steward, who is a certificated mate) to take his place. I have suspended his certificate for two months, and ordered him to pay the costs of the inquiry. I consider the master and crew of the “Kauri” free from blame.
Given under my hand this twenty-first day of May, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, at Auckland, New Zealand.
H. G. SETH SMITH,
Resident Magistrate.
I concur in the above report.
Wm. FRASER,
Nautical Assessor.
Report of Court of Inquiry into Collision between the “Coromandel” and “Norah” confirmed.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 30th June, 1884.
HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to confirm the following Report of the Court of Inquiry into the collision between the s.s. “Coromandel” and the scow “Norah,” by which the New Zealand Certificate of Service No. 2466, held by Thomas Scott, the master of the “Coromandel,” is suspended for four months from the 23rd ultimo. The collision occurred near Brown’s Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, on the 4th April last.
H. A. ATKINSON.
THAT the master of the “Coromandel” was in default in leaving the deck, the wheel being in charge of a boy who had been only eighteen months at sea, and was ignorant of the rule of the road. I am of opinion that no blame attaches to the master of the scow (S. L. Bolt). I have suspended the certificate of Thomas Scott, master of the s.s. “Coromandel,” for four months, and ordered him to pay the costs of the inquiry.
Given under my hand this twenty-third day of May, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, at Auckland, New Zealand.
H. G. SETH SMITH,
Resident Magistrate.
I concur in the above report.
Wm. FRASER,
Nautical Assessor.
