County of Waitotara constituted.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS a petition was presented to the Governor,
signed by not less than three-fifths of the county
electors contained within that portion of the County of
Wanganui included within the boundaries particularly set
forth in the First Schedule hereto, and which said portion
comprises in the whole an area of more than two hundred
thousand acres in extent, and contains more than one hun-
dred county electors: And whereas the said petition prayed
the Governor to constitute the said portion of the County of
Wanganui a new county, and to set forth the boundaries of
the proposed new county: And whereas such petition has
been publicly notified as by law required:
Now, therefore, I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the
advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said
colony, by virtue and in exercise of the powers vested in me
by “The Counties Act, 1876,” do hereby proclaim and declare
that the aforesaid portion of the County of Wanganui
shall, as from the first day of March, one thousand eight
hundred and eighty-four, constitute a new county, to be
called the County of Waitotara; and that the boundaries of
the said new county so constituted shall be those particu-
larly set forth in the First Schedule hereto; and the said
new county is hereby constituted accordingly.
And I do further proclaim and declare that the said County
of Waitotara shall be divided into four ridings, to be called
the Waitotara Riding, the Westmere Riding, the Brunswick
Riding, and the Tokomaru Riding, the boundaries whereof
shall be those particularly set forth in the Second Schedule
hereto.
And, in exercise of the like power and with the like advice
and consent as aforesaid, I do further proclaim and declare
that the number of members of the County Council of the
said County of Waitotara shall be: For the Waitotara Riding,
two members; for the Westmere Riding, two members; for
the Brunswick Riding, two members; and for the Tokomaru
Riding, one member; and that the election of such members
shall take place and be held on the twenty-second day of
March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four.
FIRST SCHEDULE.
COUNTY OF WAITOTARA.
BOUNDED towards the North-west and West generally by
the Counties of Patea and Taranaki from the ocean to the
Wanganui River; thence towards the North-east and East
by a line along the middle of that river to its mouth; and
towards the South-west by Cook Strait to the place of com-
mencement.
SECOND SCHEDULE.
WAITOTARA RIDING
Comprises all that area included in Subdivisions Nos. 1 and
2 of the Wanganui and Waitotara Road District, as described
in the New Zealand Gazette No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
WESTMERE RIDING.
Comprises all that area included in Subdivision No. 3 of
the Wanganui and Waitotara Road District, as described in
the New Zealand Gazette No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
BRUNSWICK RIDING.
Comprises all that area included in Subdivision No. 5 of
the Wanganui and Waitotara Road District, as described in
the New Zealand Gazette, No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
TOKOMARU RIDING.
Comprises all that area included in Subdivision No. 4 of
the Wanganui and Waitotara Road District, as described in
the New Zealand Gazette No. 42, 18th May, 1883.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir William
Francis Drummond Jervois, Lieutenant-General
in Her Majesty’s Army, Knight Grand Cross of the
Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable
Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-
Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral
of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said
Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington,
this twenty-sixth day of February, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
four.
