THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

  1. Every such vehicle shall have printed thereon in legible characters the name of the owner thereof, the number of the license, and the number of passengers (if plying for hire of passengers) that such vehicle is authorized to carry, or the weight of goods (in the event of a vehicle plying for hire of carriage of goods, or of passengers and goods) that such vehicle is authorized to carry. Such license shall apply to only one vehicle; and, if such owner have two or more vehicles plying for hire as aforesaid, a separate license shall be required for each such vehicle.

  2. In every such vehicle shall be specified the name and surname and place of abode of every owner of the vehicle in respect of which the license is granted, and the name of the county by the Council of which the same is granted, and also the number of the license, but so that no two licenses granted hereunder by the County Council shall bear the same number, and also the number of persons or the weight of goods, according to the nature of the vehicle, to be carried in and by such vehicle.

  3. For the carrying out of this by-law the Council shall appoint one or more persons as Inspectors of Vehicles, and the production of a warrant, under the hand of the County Chairman for appointments of such Inspector, shall be sufficient authority for the enforcement of this by-law.

  4. The County Chairman may, as often as he may deem necessary, cause an inspection of all or any licensed vehicle or vehicles to be made, and of the harness and horses used in drawing such vehicles, and if any such vehicle, or the harness or the horses used in drawing same, shall at any time be in a condition unfit for public use, the Council shall give notice to that effect to the owner thereof, which notice shall be personally served on such owner or delivered at his usual place of residence, and if, after notice aforesaid, any owner shall use or let to hire such vehicle for the carriage of goods or passengers, or use or let to hire such harness or horses whilst respectively in a condition unfit for public use, the Council may cancel or suspend for such time as may seem proper the license of such vehicle; and every driver and conductor who, knowingly, shall ply for hire with any vehicle which shall be at the time unfit for public use shall forfeit a sum not exceeding Β£5.

  5. No owner, driver, or conductor of a vehicle licensed to carry passengers or goods shall carry at one time a greater number of passengers or a greater weight of goods than he is licensed to carry.

  6. This by-law shall apply and relate to all cabs, carriages, coaches, wagons, carts, and vehicles of all descriptions used or employed for or about the carriage of passengers or goods, or both of them.

  7. Every person committing a breach of this by-law, or any of the provisions thereof, shall, for every such offence, forfeit and pay a penalty not exceeding Β£5.

  8. This by-law shall come into force and operation on the day on which the by-law appears in the Government Gazette.

Made by special order of the County Council at a special meeting held on the 12th December, 1883; confirmed at a subsequent meeting held on the 18th January, 1884; and sealed with the common seal of the Council this 18th day of January, 1884.
