The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs:—
The births were 307 in July, against 293 in June, an increase of 14. The deaths in July were 98, against 113 in June, a decrease of 15.
There were 14 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: four males, aged 86, 84, 83, and 71, and two females, both 73 years of age, died at Auckland; two males of 68 and 65 at Wellington; two males of 87 and 73, and a female of 76, at Christchurch; and two males of 84 and 65, and a female of 83, at Dunedin.
Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from these diseases amounted to 17 in July, or 17·35 per cent. of the total deaths, against 22 deaths and 19·47 per cent. in June. Diphtheria caused 4 deaths in July, of which 3 occurred in Christchurch; whooping cough also caused 3 deaths—all in Christchurch—against 5 in the same borough in June. There were 3 deaths from typhoid fever in July against 2 in June.
Constitutional Diseases.—There was a slight decrease in the number of deaths from these diseases compared with the number in the previous month. Cancer caused 2 deaths in July and 6 in June, and phthisis caused 11 deaths in July against 14 in June.
Local Diseases.—These diseases caused 47 deaths in July against 43 in June and 32 in May. In July, 1882, the deaths from these diseases were 33 in number. Diseases of the heart caused 10 deaths in July against 6 in June, and diseases of the urinary organs 6 deaths in July against 2 in June. There were 11 deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs in July and 10 in June.
