Te Makarini Scholarships.
THREE Scholarships of the annual value of £35 each, to
be held at the Native College, Te Aute, Hawke's Bay,
are offered for competition to Maori or half-caste youths, on
the conditions laid down in the Regulations of the Trustees
of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund. The examination
will be held at convenient centres on the 17th and 18th of
December, 1883.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be ob-
tained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institu-
tions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary
to the Education Department.

PATENT for an Invention for Protecting Pastures, Grow-
ing Crops, Gardens, Orchards, &c., by the use
of Barbed Bands of Iron or other Metal or Material.
JOHN SPINK HUDSON, Of Warkworth, in the County of
Rodney, and Colony of New Zealand, has deposited at this
office a specification of the said invention; and I have ap-
pointed Thursday, the 20th day of December next, at 11
o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said appli-
cation and all objections thereto; and I require all persons
having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters
Patent to leave, on or before the 5th day of December next,
at this office, particulars in writing of their objections to the
said application, otherwise they will be precluded from
urging the same.

NOTICE. EDWARD CASTRES GWYNNE, of Adelaide, South
Australia, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of South
Australia, has been appointed this day, by His Honor the
Chief Justice, to be a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of
New Zealand in South Australia aforesaid, under "The
Commissioners of the Supreme Court Act, 1875," for the
purpose of administering and taking all such oaths, affidavits,
and affirmations as in the said Act mentioned.

aforesaid, under "The Commissioners of the Supreme Court
