and then a small vacant space in which may be inserted the
name and address of vendors.

No. 2 is a rectangular oblong, surrounded by a dark-and
faint-line border. Within it, at the top, is the word "Atlantic,"
and the words "Rubber Paint." Immediately below these is a
device consisting of a rectangle, formed by double lines, the
upper and lower two of which are prolonged at either end.
Within this rectangle is represented a dragon surrounded by
flames, standing upon a slab on which are the words "Semper
idem
." Within the left-hand space formed by the prolonged
top and bottom lines and the outer border are printed vertically
the words "Cable Address," and within the right-hand space,
also vertically, the words "Earl, San Francisco." Below the
device, in separate lines, are the words, "Mixed ready for Use,"
"Pure White," "and any," "shade or colour desired," and a
small vacant space, in which may be inserted the name and
address of the vendor.

No. 3 consists of an oblong label, having a dark or black
ground, the middle of which is occupied by a white or light
space, having a curved top. In this inner space is represented
a stag standing in grass, with cliffs in the background, sur-
rounded by a double circle, on each side of which is shaded
scrollwork, and above, in a curved line, the words "The original
formula," "In use thirty years." The dark ground is printed
upon in white or light colour, and has scrollwork or flourishes
surrounding the words thereon, and in the right-hand upper
corner is represented a flying insect. In a curved line stretching
from side to side are the words "Pioneer Mixed Paint," and,
also in a curve, immediately above the inner light space the
words "Manufactured under." At the left-hand side are, upon
a curved ribbon, the words "Consists of"; and, in irregular
curves, the words "Pure," "White Lead," "Zine," "and";
and, in a straight line, the words "Linseed Oil." On the right-
hand side, in curves, the words "Pure White," "or any Shade,"
"Mixed ready," and, in a straight line, the words "For the
Brush"; and in the middle, below the inner light space, the
words "J. Earl & Son."

No. 4 consists of a blue circular space, within which may be
printed any device, and which is surrounded, but not touched,
by a wide red circle, having upon it the words "Royal Silicate
Paint"; and this red circle has an outer blue circular border.
The top and sides consist of dark and faint lines, while the
bottom is two parallel double lines, between which are the
words "Pure white and any desired shade," forming an ap-
proximately square border, in the corners of which, anglewise,
are the words "The Best," "The Cheapest," "The Brightest,"
"Most Durable."

Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade
Marks shall apply.

Paints.

NOTICE is hereby given that Messrs. WHITAKER AND
RUSSELL, of Auckland, in the Colony of New Zealand,
Solicitors, have applied, on behalf of Messrs. THORNTON, SMITH,
AND FIRTH, of Auckland, in the said colony, Millers, to
register, under "The Trade Marks Act, 1866," the trade marks
of which the following is a description :-

Description of Trade Mark No. 1.

A crown, with the following words under it: "Thornton,
Smith, Firth, Crown Flour, Auckland." Printed in blue
colour on sack or bag.

Description of Trade Mark No. 2.

An oval wreath, with the following words under it: "Thorn-
ton, Smith, Firth, Champion Flour, Auckland." Printed in
vermillion colour on sack or bag.

Description of Trade Mark No. 3.

A star with five points, with the following words under it:
"Thornton, Smith, Firth, Cantab Flour, Auckland." Printed
in vermillion colour on sack or bag.

Nature of the Article to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.

NOTICE is hereby given that EDWARD WATERS, Patent Agent,
of Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, has applied, on

behalf of HOLMES SAMUEL CHIPMAN, of No. 17, Little Collins
Street West, in Melbourne aforesaid, to register, under "The
Trade Marks Act, 1866," a trade mark of which the following
is a description, viz. :

Description of Trade Mark:

The name "Dr. Scott."

Nature of the Articles to which it is intended such Trade
Mark shall apply.

Electric hair-brushes, electric flesh-brushes, and electric
tooth-charms.

Bonuses on Colonial Industries.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 2nd February, 1883.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following bonuses will be
paid on articles produced in the Colony of New Zealand,
as under :-

SILK.

A bonus of fifty per cent. on the value realized for the first
thousand pounds (£1,000) worth of cocoons of the silkworm,
or silkworms' eggs, produced in the colony, to be paid on quan-
tities of not less value than fifty pounds (£50) nor more than
one hundred pounds (£100) produced by any one person.

MANGANEISEN AND MANGANESE-BRONZE.

A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be given for the
first two thousand five hundred pounds' (£2,500) worth of man-
ganeisen, and a similar bonus for a like amount of manganese-
bronze, produced in the colony from New Zealand ores, and
sold at a fair market price in a foreign market.

MARBLE.

A bonus of three hundred pounds (£300) will be given for
the first fifteen hundred pounds' (£1,500) worth of New Zea-
land marble exported from the colony, and sold in a foreign
market at a price of not less than 9s. per cubic foot.

ANTIMONY.

A bonus of five hundred pounds (£500) will be given for the
first 250 tons of antimony regulus produced in the colony from
New Zealand ores, and sold at a fair market price in a foreign
market.

Conditions.

  1. Notice of intention to claim any of the above bonuses
    must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not later
    than the 31st December, 1883.

  2. The claim must be made before the 30th June, 1884.

  3. The first claimant of any bonus who proves to the satis-
    faction of the Government that he has fulfilled all the condi-
    tions to be the recipient of the bonus.

  4. The other conditions as to quantity, priority, quality, and
    value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer appointed
    for the purpose by the Government.

Further information and particulars may be obtained by
application at the Colonial Secretary's Office.

WROUGHT-IRON.

A bonus of one thousand pounds (£1,000) will be given for
the production, in New Zealand, by a direct process, of 200
tons of " iron blooms," of marketable quality, from ore produced
in New Zealand.

Conditions.

  1. The bonus not to be given for any quantity less than 100
    tons.

  2. Notice of the intention to erect ironworks and claim the
    bonus must be given to the Colonial Secretary before the 31st
    December, 1883.

  3. The bonus must be claimed before the 31st December,

  4. In the event of more than one claimant giving such
    notice, not more than seven-tenths of the bonus may be claimed
    by the first producer, and not more than three-tenths by the
    second producer; but if only one claimant becomes a producer
    on the above conditions, he may claim the whole of the bonus.

  5. The iron in respect of which any bonus is claimed, and
    the ore from which it is manufactured, will be examined by an
    officer to be appointed by the Government, who may require
    the production of bona fide account-sales of quantities not less
    than 100 tons weight, showing that such iron has been sold at
    a fair market price as wrought-iron.
