Altering Rates of Pay of Writers in the Customs Depart-
ment.
Department of Trade and Customs,
Wellington, 19th June, 1883.
REFERRING to the regulations for the appointment of
writers to the departments of the Civil Service of New
Zealand, published in the Gazette, No. 14, of the 25th February,
1871, it is hereby notified that, after this date, the pay of
writers appointed in the Department of Trade and Customs
will be at the following rates:
Eight shillings per day for six days in the week, with
increase each year after the first year of sixpence per
day, to a maximum of twelve shillings per day.
The regulations referred to are unaltered in all other
respects, and still remain in force.

Notice to Mariners, No. 21 of 1883.
FAIRWAY BUOY, KAIKOURA.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 22nd June, 1883.
THE Harbourmaster at Kaikoura reports that a second
anchor has been laid to hold the Fairway Buoy in position;
and that sailing vessels running-in to the wharf should anchor
inside of the buoy, and nothing to the eastward.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Com-
missioner of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, are pub-
lished for general information.

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.—CAPE NELSON LIGHTHOUSE.
NOTICE is hereby given that a lighthouse now in course of erec-
tion on the southern extremity of Cape Nelson will be com-
pleted about the month of November, 1883.
The light will be a fixed white light, elevated 250 feet above
the level of the sea, and will illuminate an arc of about 180
degrees seaward, and be visible, in clear weather, 19 nautical
miles distant.
The lighthouse, 79 feet high, will be constructed of stone.
Position, approximate—Latitude, 38° 25′ 45″ S.; longitude,
141° 32′ 55″ E.
BASS STRAITS.—CLIFFY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE.
NOTICE is hereby given that a lighthouse now in course of erec-
tion on the southern side of Cliffy Island will be completed
about the month of November, 1883.
The light will be a flashing light showing red, and giving five
flashes and eclipses alternately in one minute. It will be
elevated 180 feet above the level of the sea, and should be
visible all round, in clear weather, from a distance of 15 nautical
miles.
The lighthouse, 25 feet high, will be constructed of stone.
Position, approximate—Latitude, 38° 58′ 10″ S.; longitude,
146° 42′ 24″ E.
FUTURE notices will appear, giving further particulars and the
exact dates on which the above-mentioned lights will be
exhibited.

schools, churches, and other buildings requiring ventilation;
and so constructed as to effectually prevent rain from driving
up the Louvre and into the building, without diminishing the
space for ventilation.
EDWARD BARTLEY, of Auckland, in the Provincial Dis-
trict of Auckland, and Colony of New Zealand, Architect,
has deposited at this office a specification of the said invention;
and I have appointed Friday, the 31st day of August next, at
11 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said appli-
cation and all objections thereto; and I require all persons
having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent
to leave, on or before the 16th day of August next, at this
office, particulars in writing of their objections to the said
application, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the
same.
