Constitutional Diseases. These diseases also caused a larger number of deaths than in the previous month: the deaths
from phthisis having increased from 9 in November to 15 in December.
Local Diseases. There was a large increase in the deaths from these causes in December, the numbers having been 40 in
November and 50 in December. The increase is attributable to a larger number of infantile deaths given as from convulsions,
and an increase in the deaths from diseases of the heart, these deaths having been 5 in November and 10 in December.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal zymotic
diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
