NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1883.

Auckland. On the whole fine, but at times showery; the maximum rain recorded on 25th, 1.35 in.; strong S.W. wind on 6th, and
from S. on 15th, otherwise moderate, and prevailed from N.W.

Wellington. Very fine weather with variable winds up to night of 10th, when rain came on from N.W., very close; heavy rain during
the 11th, 1.23 in. recorded on 12th, the maximum for month; from 12th to 28th splendid weather, though at times very warm, with
oppressive nights, wind chiefly N.W., and stormy on 20th and 21st, otherwise wind during month moderate, and prevailed from N.W.; on
night of 28th rain came on from N.W., and wind changed to S.E., and cooler; remainder of month fine.

Lincoln. Small total rain, but showery in middle and towards end of month, the maximum fall being 644 in. on 29th; moderate winds,
prevailing from N.E.

Dunedin. Very fine with only slight showers, the greatest rainfall recorded on 12th, 234 in.; light winds, mostly N.E.; frequent
calms; fog on 28th.

Waitangi. Fine and dry, but strong S.W. wind prevailed; maximum rainfall on 13th, 16 in.

GENERAL REMARKS. Very fine weather throughout with generally moderate winds prevailing from N.E. and N.W.; little rain;
temperature above the average.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY, 1883.

Auckland. Heavy rain during the month especially towards end, the maximum recorded on 25th, 2.64 in.; strong wind on 20th and
23rd to 25th from N.E.; prevailing winds N.E. and N.W.

Wellington. Stormy and unpleasant on 1st, wind N.W. and heavy rain in night; next two days fine and warm from N.W.; on night
of 4th heavy rain, 40 in., and strong wind, and on afternoon of 5th heavy rain, wind changing to S.E., and cooler, followed by a pleasant,
cool S.E. day on 6th; from 7th to 16th generally fine, with N.W. wind, and stormy on 8th, 9th, and 13th; very heavy rain on night of 17th,
wind changed to S.E., 1.43 in. recorded on 18th; 19th to 21st fine from S.E., then showery to end of month, though at times pleasant, wind
chiefly S.E. and N.E.

Lincoln. Small total rain but showery, the maximum fall recorded on 18th, 190 in.; winds variable and moderate except on 19th,
strong from N.E.

Dunedin. Very wet weather, especially on 5th, 1.03 in., and 15th, 2.41 in. (the maximum); thunder on 9th and 14th; prevailing wind
N.E. and light.

Waitangi. Generally fine with moderate rainfall, the maximum recorded on 27th, 1 in.; stormy on 6th, S.W., and 9th N.W., and 25th
N.E.; prevailing wind from N.W.; fog on 10th.

GENERAL REMARKS. Except at Lincoln the rainfall greatly in excess of average; on the whole a wet unpleasant month; temperature
in excess. Earthquakes at Wellington on 5th, at 10 p.m., slight, and 14th, between 2 and 3 a.m., slight.
