NOTES FOR JULY, 1883.
Auckland.—From 1st to 4th, showery, with S.W. winds; 5th and 6th, fine, wind veering to N.E.; 7th and 8th, easterly gale, with
rain; 9th, fine and warm; 10th to 22nd, mostly showery, with variable winds, but chiefly from W. or S.W.; 23rd, fine and clear, with
very severe frost; 24th, fine and warm, wind changing to N.E.; 25th and 26th, strong N.E. gale, with heavy rain, 1.10 in. being
registered on the 26th; 27th to end of month, mostly S.W. winds and slight showers.
Wellington.—Showery, cold weather almost throughout the month; winds prevailing from S.E. and N.E., very strong on nights
of 3rd, 7th, and 10th, with rain; maximum rainfall on 4th, .70 in.; thunder on 19th; hail on 21st.
Lincoln.—Showery weather, but no heavy rainfalls, .84 in. on 31st being maximum for month; prevailing S.W. and W. winds,
and moderate; snow and hail on 21st; some fine bright days occurred.
Dunedin.—Generally showery, but fine during middle part; maximum rainfall recorded on 30th, 1.92 in.; also heavy rainfall on
3rd and 31st; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 20th; snow on 21st.
GENERAL REMARKS.—A showery month generally, although some fine weather at intervals; temperature about the average.
Earthquakes reported at Wellington on 4th, after midnight, smart; on 5th, at 3.30 a.m., slight; and on 9th, at 2.40 p.m., slight.
NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1883.
Auckland.—From 1st to 13th, mostly fine clear weather, with light southerly winds; barometer unusually high; slight showers
on 4th, 9th, and 11th; 14th, cloudy and threatening, with stiff N.E. breeze; 15th to 19th, squally and showery, with variable winds;
20th and 21st, fine but cloudy, with strong westerly breeze; from 22nd to 25th, S.E. winds, with much cold rain, 1.02 in. being
registered on the morning of the 24th, 23rd and 24th being particularly cold, wet, and disagreeable, snow falling in several places in
the vicinity of the town; from 26th to 29th, showery and squally, with westerly winds; 30th, wind shifting to N.; 31st, strong N.E.
gale, with heavy rain, 1.3 in. registered.
Wellington.—Up to 4th, showery and dull, wind S.E.; from 5th to 12th, fine bright weather, N.W. wind; night of 13th, severe N.W.
gale, followed by rain on 14th; 15th, fine from N.W., with falling barometer, and at night changed to S.S.W., with heavy rain and
wind, 1.15 in. rain recorded on 16th; fine and bright on 16th, wind S.W.; from 17th to 21st fine from N.W.; from 22nd to 26th, cold
showery weather from S.E., and hail on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th; during remainder of month fine from N.W., until night of 30th, when
it changed to S.E., with rain; prevailing wind from N.W.
Lincoln.—Fine weather; small rainfall, the maximum, .88 in., recorded on 1st; variable winds and moderate; hail on 22nd, 23rd,
and 24th.
Dunedin.—Fine, with slight rainfall, the maximum being on 14th, .41 in.; clear, frosty weather from 4th to 6th; high wind on
20th from S.W., from which quarter it prevailed.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Fine month, with rain below the average, but at times squally cold weather.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1883.
Auckland.—From 1st to 9th, squally and unpleasant weather, with a N.E. gale on the 6th, and low barometer (29.16); middle
portion of the month, from 10th to 23rd, unusually fine and clear, with light variable winds and very high barometer, reaching 30.57
on the 20th; from 24th to 27th cloudy and gloomy, with occasional slight showers; from 28th to 30th squally and unpleasant, with
westerly breeze; hailstorm on the morning of the 30th; rainfall small, hardly more than half the average, and the least recorded for
the month since 1872.
Wellington.—On the whole a showery month, though there were some fine bright days during middle part; prevailing S.E. winds,
and at times squally, but no very stormy weather; cold towards end of month from S.E., with hail on 17th and 30th, and snow on
hills on latter date; fog on 3rd and 4th; maximum rainfall recorded on 29th, .72 in.
Lincoln.—Wet early part, fine during middle, and showery towards end; maximum rainfall on 6th, 1.84 in.; prevailing N.E.
wind, and moderate, but strong S.W. wind on 5th and 6th; snow on 29th.
Dunedin.—Showery beginning and latter part; maximum rainfall on 6th, 1.57 in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 29th;
fine weather during middle of month.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Generally showery early and latter part of month, but fine during middle, with moderate, variable winds.
Earthquake—Wellington, on 27th, at 7.15 p.m. A vivid coloration of the southern sky after sunset and before sunrise was observed
during this month, due probably to vapour being suspended at an unusually great altitude.
